#5 Diabetes: 6 Surprising Reasons You're Not Performing Well

This is a transcript of a podcast/YouTube episode by Dr. Anne Truong MD titled '#5 Diabetes: 6 Surprising Reasons You're Not Performing Well.' The host explains how high blood sugar and insulin resistance damage blood vessels and nerves, reducing penile blood flow and causing erectile dysfunction. She cites clinical thresholds (fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1C), references a Journal of Sexual Medicine finding that men with diabetes develop ED about a decade earlier, and recommends blood testing and lifestyle changes (Mediterranean diet, exercise) before medication.

One of the surprising reason why you have E.D. well, number five is diabetes. Well, diabetes is really a condition where you have high blood sugar floating in your blood that your body's not not secreting enough insulin, which come from your pancreas, which drive the sugar in your blood into your organs and your cell. Essentially if, let's just say you eat a cookie, you have a gush of sugar that's in your blood and then the pancreas, which is the organ that's in your abdomen, secretes insulin and then the insulin goes out and make those sugar chemicals actually go into your body to give you energy. But what happened with diabetes, especially adult onset, is that the insulin gets secreted but it's not working as well and the blood sugar stays high in the blood system and therefore the, you become what, insulin resistance. And then when you get blood work, it shows that you have a high level of blood sugar in your system in, in your blood. I mean, so particularly very important when it comes to a man's erection because penis, when it gets erected has 40 times more blood vessels in it than when it's not erected. So when it has 40 times more blood vessel and is very sensitive to what's in the blood. Right, because inside the blood vessel is blood. What's floating through your blood is what you eat. What you eat is floating through your blood. So if you eating a cookie and a donut and followed by a coke, well, you're gonna have a lot of sugar that is floating and that is in your blood. And then your insulin is being secreted when it's not working as well, that's when you start having a high amount of sugar in the blood. That is what is defined as diabete. And if you're over 140 fasting on a blood test and then a hemoglobin A1C probably a higher than range of 6.1, 6.2 in a hemoglobin A1C. But if you're a pre diabetic, if you're between 5.7 to about 6.2 at this point, why is sugar not good for your erection? Because sugar, what it does is that it causes inflammation of the endothelium. In the last episode I talked about the endothelial endothelium, the lining of the blood vessel. So what it does is that it causes inflammation of that lining of that cell and those cells, it loses its strength and it, it caused the blood sugar kind of spill out into, through the blood vessels as well. And that the second part about how sugar is bad is that is the neurotoxic, it actually weaken your nerve, it actually make it inflammatory to the nerve. And what that does is it, it make the nerve start dying away. And your penis need the, the nerve, right? It needs the parasympathetic sympathetic as well as the pudendal nerve in order for it to function. And on top of that, the, the high amount of blood sugar that is in the blood, what happened is that it gets deposited as a plaque in the blood vessels which then get built up over time. And that's what causes the decreased blood flow or the blood vessel blockage, similar to what you get when you have a heart attack or stroke or ED is almost like having a penis attack because you're not getting enough blood flow down there. A study that had been done in the Journal of Sexual Medicine indicate that you have diabetes. You most likely will have ED a decade sooner than someone that doesn't have diabetes. So if you have ed, go get it checked out, go get, go see a doctor and get some blood work and maybe you may have new onset diabetes that you're not aware of. And the blood work will show that. And diabetes can be easily managed with diet, eating a Mediterranean diet, exercise, knowing what to avoid, knowing what to eat and doing those measures probably goes a long way before you get on the diabetic medication. I know my husband has a heart issue and, and he's healthy, he eats well and he exercise, but he still has heart issues. And a lot of that mainly from genetics. So take it from me, I'm living with it on a daily basis and I know what cardiovascular disease is all about and how that is contributing to blood flow. So guys, if you have ed, don't go for that Viagra that Seattle, find out why you have ed. Just do some blood work first. Go see the doctor and do some blood work first and reevaluate what type of diet are you eating? Are you eating more fruits and vegetables? Are you? Or are you more like a hamburger, French fries, chips and a Coke or sweet iced tea? Because if you're eating consuming more of that, your body's not going to be able to handle all the blood sugar overflow that you are feeding and it's going to become insulin resistant. So stay tuned. The next episode I'm going to go over the number six surprising reason why you may have Ed and if you find this useful I would appreciate it.
