Effective Strategies Against Performance Anxiety for Erectile Dysfunction

YouTube video (podcast-style) by Anne Truong MD explaining how performance anxiety contributes to erectile dysfunction (ED). It outlines psychological causes (fear of failure, unrealistic expectations, low confidence, negative past experiences, social/family pressure, stress, relationship issues, societal/gender expectations), lists mental and physical symptoms (negative thoughts, difficulty achieving/maintaining erection, increased heart rate, sweating, nausea, muscle tension, shallow breathing), describes the sympathetic vs parasympathetic mechanisms, and recommends treatments including mindfulness/box breathing, CBT/sex or couples therapy, lifestyle changes (exercise, Mediterranean diet, reduce alcohol/tobacco), hormone evaluation, and open partner communication. The video also promotes Dr. Truong's Modern Man Club and a five-day challenge.

Feeling the pressure in the Bedroom Learn about the surprising link between performance anxiety and ed. In this video we're diving deep into the hidden causes of performance anxiety and erectile dysfunction and revealing the effective strategy to regain your confidence and performance. Stay tuned because the solution might surprise you. Performance anxiety is significant psychological factor that can lead to ed. This condition involves intense worry and fear about sexual performance that can really interfere with the ability to achieve and maintain your erection. Here is a detailed overview of the relationship between performance anxiety and ed, including causes and symptoms and treatment. Now what are the causes of performance anxiety that can lead to ed? Now just know that performance anxiety is mainly more to psychological stress and emotional factors. Number one, fear of failure. Meaning a significant cause is that you're fearing that you're not going to meet the expectation set by yourself or even set by others in this particular scenarios of performing in the bedroom. Number two is really unrealistic expectations. Setting excessively high goals or expecting perfection, accepting hard, firm, bigger, longer or wider actually can lead to anxiety because the belief there is no room for errors can really exacerbate or make this feeling worse. Number three, lack of confidence. Doubting one's ability or skills can lead to performance anxiety. This is a lack of confidence stem from not feeling adequate, prepared or even being in a new and challenging relationship. Number four is negative past experiences. Like previous negative experiences such as failing in a performance or being criticized by your partner can really cause anxiety. Especially for a similar future situation and the memory of the past failure can trigger the fear of repeating the same mistakes. Number five, high stakes situations where there's a lot of stakes such as you want to impress that new partner, want to make sure everything goes perfect, setting too much expectations, patient on yourself. Number six is social anxiety. Like for instance sometimes you feel overwhelmed in social situation that can extend to the bedroom as well too. Number seven, this is very interesting is people pleasing behavior like the desire to please others and fear of disappointing them can contribute to performance anxiety as well. Like wanting to be highly concerned about other people's opinion of you. Number eight is family pressure. Expectation and pressure from your partner can lead to performance anxiety when there's a strong desire to prove yourself worthy. Number nine, Stress. Yes, stress, stress stress or just distraction like general stress from your work, your relationship or financial concern can really really affect down under there for you. The last part is. Number 10 is the negative thoughts and self esteem issues. Concerned about body image, penis size or the ability to satisfy their partner and trying to get the partner to have like 10 orgasm and the ability to go three to 10 times a day. And another thing to consider that I didn't talk about was number 11 was relationship issues such as problem relationship or lack of trust or poor communication can really exacerbate performance anxiety. And last but not least, number 12 is society and gender role expectation. Like society, pressure from the media to be like porn star, right? To be ready all the time and to be rock hard and to be able to perform all day long. And that can lead to performance anxiety as well too. So what are the symptoms of performance anxiety that translate to ed? Well, performance anxiety can manifest in various ways, both mentally and physically, and which I find is fascinating. So the mental symptoms is that you have fear of not being able to perform. So you start having negative thoughts about your ability and worry about your partner's satisfaction. So the physical symptom of performance anxiety is difficulty getting or maintaining an erection and almost finishing too early or taking too long to finish, increased heart rate, sweating, and even nausea. So forming anxiety can significantly impact your physical performance in various ways and, and even the way you think, as well as your emotional responses. The physical part of performance anxiety is increasing heart rate and increasing blood pressure. So what this means is that it triggers a sympathetic nervous system pathway, which you don't want to do, because the sympathetic nervous system pathway is fight and flight is for emergency situations when you're stressed and you certainly don't want to be stressed or flying away. When you're in the bedroom and you want to be relaxed, you want to be in the moment, you want to activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which is more relaxation, which is sleep, which is increasing blood flow. So when you're in a fight or flight response or the sympathetic nervous system, then it's very hard for you to get an erection. And you can feel this as increasing heart rate as well as increasing blood pressure as well as. And the other thing you may feel is muscle tension and trembling where the muscle can be tense. That means that divert the blood flow. Instead of going to your penis, it goes to your buttock muscle, your arms or your legs, which is not good for your performance. The other part is breathing difficult. You may find that you're breathing very shallow or rapid breathing, which can then reduce oxygen to the most important part and sometimes can lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, and a feeling of being out of breath even. The other issue is that it could even cause nausea and stomach cramps and even diarrhea with stress. I know that when I'm nervous about competing I often sometimes have stomach upset. Now the other presentation of performance anxiety is sweating and dry mouth. Excessive sweating and dry mouth are constant common physical symptoms. And it's distracting because you're not paying attention to the moment, right? You're not enjoying the immediate gratification being in the moment. You're thinking about your dry mouth as well. And the other part about affecting, it's also affecting your cognitive function such as your focus and your concentration. Anxiety can cause you to overthink it and difficulty concentrating on the task at hand, which it being in the moment, enjoying your partner and trying to relax it almost like disrupt the process and you're reverting to the sympathetic nervous system. And then performance anxiety can also lead to negative self talk and self doubt, which can undermine your confidence and your ability to perform in the bedroom. Also, you have feelings of dread and panic and sometimes an overwhelming feeling of doom as well too, which can emotionally drain and SAP your energy and your blood flow, which is the last thing you want to happen. But you want to have your energy and your blood flow going to your sexual organ. So what does this lead to? This lead to avoidance behavior, meaning you don't want to get involved and being intimate with anyone. You want to avoid the situation because it's too stressful and you're doubting yourself. And this lead to a negative spiral because you're avoiding it. And then you're getting less confidence in your performance and it just build up a black hole for you. So what are the treatments for performance anxiety? Well, there are several strategies that can help manage performance and, and also help with improving your erection. So number one, I want to talk about things that you can do on your own first, which is number one, called mindfulness and meditation. What the heck does that mean? That means that being aware, what I just mentioned about your symptoms, the way how you feel, being aware that when you are having that, that's just anxiety. That's just kind of like the negative thoughts that you have. So what you need to do is to know that hey, that's just a negative thought that I'm having. It is not actually true. May have happened the first few times, this time will be different. So you think positively. So if you are involved again in another relationship or another partner, just be in the moment enjoying that person, enjoying her. Being relaxed, paying attention to your five senses, such as vision, your smell, the taste, the hearing and your touch. And then practice box breathing, meaning you want to slow down your breathing like you want to breathe into your nose for a count of four. Like 1, 2, 3, and then hold for a count of four and then breathe out to your nose or through your mouth for a count of four. And then hold it for a count of four. So that's called box breathing. So check out my previous episode, box Breathing here on Mindfulness. And when you do box breath breathing or slow down your breathing, you are able to tap into the parasympathetic nervous system. You're able to relax yourself and you're thinking about the breathing. You're not thinking about the negative thought, you're not thinking about the self doubt, you're not thinking about the past experiences. I want you just to think about the breathing, the box breathing. Hold for four, breathe in for four, hold for four, breathe out 20 before. And then close your eyes when you're doing this as well. When you close your eyes, imagine your experience, what you want it to be. Think of positive thoughts. Don't let any negative thought creep into your brain at all. So close your eyes when you're doing your box breathing. Another trick I like you to do is to go to the bathroom, empty your bladder. And when you empty your bladder, all the blood flow, all the nerve is going to be going to the important organ down there that needs to perform. And so that's one thing. And then just slow down your breathing, think about the positive experiences and don't be hard on yourself. Because if you have a performance anxiety, it can be treated, definitely can be treated. These are things that you can do yourself. Then add on to that right before you have bedroom performance, maybe perhaps just do a five minute meditation in the bathroom, just close your eyes again, just do your box breathing as well. Clear your mind. All right. And if you find yourself with your heart rate beating up, then you know that you need to put a stop. Your heart rate can increase when you're aroused, that's okay. But then you start to have sweaty palms, start to have some stomach upset and no shallow breathing. Then just be aware of the symptoms that you have when you have performance anxiety. So that's number one is do it yourself. You can do it yourself and know that you can do it. So I've given you some great tips there other things I want you to do is perhaps look into cognitive behavioral therapy or cbt. So this therapy help individual identify and change negative thoughts, thought and behaviors related to your sexual performance. And you can do that with a sex therapist that can work directly with you. Or you can do that with couples therapy as well too to improve communication and resolve relationship issues. This has been very effective for couples that I recommend therapy other things and other alternative is perhaps getting your hormone treated with getting your testosterone measure and hormone replacement therapy can also help as well too, because as I mentioned in the past in my previous episode, low testosterone can lead to anxiety as well as loss of confidence as well too. And there are lifestyle factors such as regular exercise, a healthy diet such as the Mediterranean diet. Check out the Mediterranean diet in the description below in the episode here and also the Good morning wood smoothie as well. Taking the Good morning wood smoothie every day and eating a Mediterranean diet where fresh fruits and vegetables and moderating your alcohol content and also stopping smoking as much as you can. This will also help with your performance anxiety as well too. Now you can think about perhaps taking some medication that will help with the anxiety. But again anxiety medication will also affect your erection as well as antidepressant medication will affect your erection as well too. So something to consider is perhaps trying to do these recommendations that I have to do it yourself first and to change your diet, your exercise routine and avoiding the alcohol and the smoke will go a long way. Physical exercise exercise can help reduce your stress level and will lower your blood pressure, will also increase blood flow as well. What type of exercise exercises that you can do such as walking 30 minutes a day or just doing squat, doing lunges, doing deadlift, just doing those type of exercise will bring blood flow down to the pelvic nerve region as well as to your legs. And again, open communication with your partner, discussing your concern and your anxiety with your partner can really reduce the pressure and really improve your sexual experiences. So performance anxiety is a common issue that lead to erectile dysfunction, but it is treatable with the right combination psychological intervention and the lifestyle modification that I recommend as well as during therapy and also address the underlying causes of your anxiety as well too. And having an open communication with your partner is pivotal to overcoming performance anxiety. Oftentimes I see the performance anxiety that still lingers even after I treat the patient for decreased blood flow for their ed. But I do know it can be overcome. So just know that you can overcome performance anxiety and with that you can even probably do strategy to even overcome the physical causes of ED as well too. So I hope you enjoyed this episode.
