How Prolonged Sitting Could Be Harming Your Sex Life

Anne Truong MD explains how sitting all day compresses pelvic nerves and reduces blood flow to the penis and prostate, impairing erections. Standing desks, taking breaks every few hours, and doing squats or bridges can help. Prolonged sitting also links to less exercise and worse eating, both risk factors for erectile dysfunction.

Do you know that prolonged sitting can affect your erection? Stay tuned to find out. Men, do you know that prolonged sitting can really affect your bedroom performance? Let's dive in. Well, if you sit for a long period of time, and I know this is the computer age, you're in front of the computer for hours on end and you lose yourself in whatever project you've been doing. And, and I myself is a victim to that as well. I can sit in front of the computer for hours and not get up and move. However, I want to point out some side effect of prolonged sitting that is affecting your health, especially affecting your erection. This is for both men and women. For instance, if you sit for prolonged period of time, you're really sitting on your two sitting bones. Those are called the ischiotuberosity. There's a sitting bone. And for men, when you're sitting for a long period of time, you're actually putting pressure on your scrotum and you're putting pressure on the prostate and you're putting pressure even on the rectal area. Now, let me show you what I mean as an anatomy here. And you can see in this picture here, you see all the nerves that are in the pelvic area. And when you sit, the pressure is put on the rectum. And then you see here, in between your anus here, and then your scrotum is your prostate. When you sit, you're actually sitting like this. You're sitting on your sitting bone and you put pressure on the anus area and the prostate and even in the scrotum. And on this picture, it shows that there are a lot of nerves that are coming to the rectal area, the base of the penis, as well as to the prostate. So you put continuous pressure in that area. And also if you sit for a long period of time, it can compress those nerves. And studies have shown that when you prolong, sitting can also affect the blood flow, blood circulation down to the pelvic area. And, and as you know, your penis needs a lot of blood flow in order for it to get an erection. So two things with prolonged sitting is decreased blood flow to the scrotal area, the base of the penis, even to the prostate and the rectal area could even probably a cause for irritation of your hemorrhoids, if you do have hemorrhoids. And then the nerve getting compressed. As you can see, the. There are many nerves that are in that region there. And another thing too, if you sit for a long period of time, you kind of cut down the time that you Go exercise. I'm a victim of that, too. But I'm sitting and working. I like to munch out. I'm eating some snacks that sometime may not be the best snacks of all. One of my weakness is potato chips. I like potato chip, but now I actually try to eat popcorn instead of potato chips or cauliflower chips or bean chips. But if you're sitting in front of the computer, you snack out. And if you're working in front of the computer, it probably would take the time that you would exercise out. So if you combine that with a poor diet and not exercising on top of prolonged sitting, that causes decreased circulation and nerve compression. So this is a bad combination that will contribute to decreased penile health and getting an erection as well. So things to consider. Let's say you have to work in front of the computer for a prolonged period of time, whether it's for work or not for work. Just be mindful that you need to get up and get some circulation going, decrease the compression of the nerve that is in the pelvic floor and just stand up and start doing some squats. Do 10 squats. So that way you bring more blood flow to the pelvic area. And also maybe do some bridges lying down, bringing your butt up like that. This picture here, doing bridges, like 10 bridges. And if you can do it, you can do one leg raise bridges, but at least do some squats, walk around maybe just five minutes, do that. Now, if you have a standing desk, you can certainly do that. That will be easy. But you don't have a standing desk. Just back away from the computer. Just do 10 squats and then walk around the room and then come back to the area. So that way, when you're doing this, you bring in more blood flow to the pelvic region. You're taking away the pressure from the nerves that you're sitting on, and you're just allowing some good muscle contraction in the pelvic area, which is much needed as well. And you may even take some pressure off of the prostate as well. Now, there's no literature today that's prolonged sitting will affect the prostate, but structurally wise, it kind of makes sense because the prostate sit right here in between your scrotum and your anus. And when you're sitting, you're putting pressure on that as well. It doesn't hurt to know, and it doesn't hurt to just move around. It may even wake you up when you're sitting and probably improve your focus as well, too. So just be mindful that prolonged sitting can affect your bedroom performance and just stand up and do some squats and just walk around to get more blood flow in there to take the pressure off the nerve and maybe burn some extra calories. If you're working at home, maybe you go work out after four hours, do like 30 minutes or an hour working out and then come back to your workstation. Interestingly, we are seeing higher incidence of ED with people working at home and also higher incidence of men with lower testosterone. So I wonder if that has to do with the pressure on the scrotal area and the testicles are what makes the 90% of the testosterone so something to think about. Well, I hope you like this episode.
