The Effects of Vaping on Your Erection: What is the Evidence?

Dr. Anne Truong (host of the "Modern Man" podcast) reviews existing evidence on how vaping might affect erectile function. She identifies three plausible mechanisms reported in studies: vaping causes inflammation/oxidative stress that can damage blood vessels; flavor additives may reduce nitric oxide availability (impairing penile blood vessel and smooth muscle relaxation); and vaping may increase sympathetic nervous system tone (opposing the parasympathetic response needed for erection). Dr. Truong emphasizes that direct causal evidence linking e-cigarette use to erectile dysfunction is limited — a review of ~40 publications found signals of inflammation and oxidative stress but overall evidence is insufficient — and she advises caution for vapers. The episode also includes promotional material for her Modern Man Club, male sexuality course, and a free guide; she cites personal clinical experience treating over 7,000 men.

Hello there Modern Man. I'm Dr. Anne Truong and today we're going to talk about vaping and ed. Vaping as you know has been very popular with young adult including my son who had been vaping. So I want I've been really curious about what it does and is it better than cigarettes. It is still unknown at this time, but I can tell you what recent studies I have looked at has shown. So vaping has been promoted as less harmful alternative to smoking cigarettes. But we really don't know at this time and E cigarettes are still fairly new and we need to really find out does it contribute to the same harmful effect as smoking cigarettes? We do know that smoking cigarette which has nicotine can actually contribute to blood vessel damage and therefore call cardiovascular disease. And we know that decreased blood flow or blood vessel damage lead to erectile dysfunction, but it can also lead to heart attacks and strokes. However, the effect of E cigarette on the cardiovascular function is less clear. There was a study that came out that looked at 40 publications looking at vaping and what they found out. Multiple studies have confirmed that E vaping or E cigarette causes inflammation and also oxidative stress. So what it means is that oxidative stress is kind of like a free radical that damages the cells and your cell become kind of injured and it can't do the work. So what it does is that it damages the blood vessels. The oxidative stress damages the blood vessels that the blood vessel may not be as strong or intact or responsive to opening and closing with the blood flow as much as it can be. So it can damage the blood vessel lining. Secondly, studies have also shown that the flavor additive in the E cigarette can actually decrease nitric oxide availability and nitric oxide act on the blood vessels as well as the muscles in the penis for it to relax. So nitric oxide affect the blood vessels so that way it can open up and get more blood in. And it can also affect the penis muscle, the corpus cavernosum, so it can relax. So that way it can receive the blood. Um, so that's number two. And then number three, E cigarette can increase sympathetic nervous system tone. And when a sympathetic nervous system is a system that gets activated when you're fight or flight, when you're stressed. Uh, you, when you're. When you are full trying to run away from a threat. Yeah. The last thing you want to think about is having sex, right. You want to be able to have good vision. You want to be able to have all the blood goes into your muscles and your periphery of your arms and your legs. You can run away from the threat. Well, that's what happened is that when you have an erection, your parasympathetic nervous system need to be activated. That's the, that's the relax and and and breathe nervous system. Which more in this, in the nervous system that is activated when you're relaxed and you're in the mood to have sex. So the sympathetic nervous system is activated. And so when that happened, it. It make the blood vessels smaller and reduce blood flow to the penis. And you don't want that. Right. And so there's three ways how vaping can not help with erection. Number one is that it cause inflammation and oxidative stress, damaging the blood vessel cells. Number two, the, the additive from the E cigarette can actually decrease nitric oxide. And number three, E cigarettes cannot can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system which is a fight or flight and therefore will affect the ability for the penis muscle to relax and be able to get firm with the increasing blood flow. But sympathetic nervous system also lessen the blood flow as well. So in the end, there is not enough evidence available at this time to associate E cigarette and ed. However, the evidence so far says that vaping may pose a threat to the blood vessel tissue and perhaps can contribute to ed. So for those individual that are vaping, it is advised that you proceed with caution and that if you are noticing any changes in your performance, perhaps look at the t if you're vaping, because vaping you do get some nicotine as well. We do know from cigarettes that nicotine decreases blood flow, that it cause inflammation, not to even mention cancer at this time. So that is all for today's episode.
