Uncovering the Top 10 Most Common Questions About Erectile Dysfunction

A podcast episode by Dr. Anne Truong that answers the 10 most common questions men ask about erectile dysfunction (ED). It defines ED, summarizes prevalence and major causes (largely physical), and emphasizes lifestyle modification (exercise, Mediterranean diet, sleep, stress reduction) as primary prevention and treatment alongside medical options and emerging therapies (PRP/stem-cell injections, shockwave therapy, nitric-oxide boosting supplements). The episode repeatedly links ED to cardiovascular risk and urges medical evaluation (blood work) rather than only symptom-masking medications.

Welcome. I'm Dr. Ann Truong. Welcome to this episode. We're going to talk about the 10 top questions that men have when they have ED. This is the most research question that is on Google. It is on forum everywhere and I'm just going to give you some more details on that. So number one, right? What is the number one question? What is ed? ED is a condition in which a man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection during sexual activity. It's a common problem that affect at least 30 million men. This is a study that was in in 1994 and God knows what it is right now. I'm expecting probably 60 million men at this point and, and that possibly even counting Covid because we know that Covid is inflammation of the blood vessels and ED is related to blood flow and ED have a significant impact on the quality of life and sexual relationship. And that ED is very common if you are between the ages of 40 to 70, 50% of men have ED. And ED could also mean that you can still have an erection. It just take you longer to get an erection. Or that when you have an erection you may lose it during penetration or you can't orgasm or ejaculation. All those definitions are all part of the definition of ED. Question number two, what causes ED? There are a variety of causes of ED. 90% of causes are physical, 10% of causes are psychological. Physical causes include heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, inactivity, smoking and excessive alcohol. Other causes like psychological include stress, anxiety, performance anxiety and depression. Lifestyle factors play a big role in ed, such as smoking, like I mentioned earlier, excessive alcohol consumption and sedentary behavior, particularly if your waist is over 40 inches. Question number three, is ED a normal part of aging? No, ED is not a normal part of aging. Even though men that older develop the risks of developing ed because risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, because that happens More, when you're older, you're just not exercising as much, therefore you have those conditions. However, it is not an inevitable part of aging process. You can still be 90 and you can still have good sexual function. Question number four. Are there any natural remedies for ed? There are some natural remedies that can be found to help with ed, including exercise, such as a high intensity interval exercise doing about three hours a week, a healthy diet such as the Mediterranean diet and stress management technique, and learning how to more relax and perhaps add some meditation to your day. However, it's important to remember that these remedies are not guaranteed to work for everyone and should be used in conjunction with your doctor's advice because you really do need to have blood work to figure out whether you may have diabetes. You may even have high cholesterol as well too. Question number five. Can stress and anxiety cause ED? Yes, it can. Stress and anxiety can cause ED and in fact it accounts for about 10% of ED. The reason why is because stress and anxiety increases your cortisol level, which then increases your adrenaline and your norepinephrine, which then causes constriction in your blood flow. And when you don't have enough blood flow and, and, and when you're stressed, you're stimulating the sympathetic nervous system, which is your fight or flight nervous system. You're not going to be able to be relaxed, the penis muscles not relaxed, you're not able to generate and therefore you're not going to be able to get an erection. Remember, parasympathetic nervous system is to get an erection. Sympathetic nervous system is to get an ejaculation. But you need to have the dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system to to be able to get an erection. But if you're stressed and if you're not relaxed, then you're not going to be able to get an erection. Also should also see your doctor again for blood work. Question number six. Can ED be treated? Of course it can be treated. There are a variety of treatment options available. The main thing is lifestyle changes first, right? Why? Because that's so much easier. Are you smoking? Are you drinking a lot of alcohol? Are you doing a lot of porn that's interfering with your day? Are you exercising? What type of diet are you eating? Are you eating more processed food? A high carb diet? Are you sleeping? Are you getting at least seven hours of sleep a day? What is your stress level? Do you have time to meditate? You have time to relax and you should try the lifestyle modification first and also get your blood work to make sure you don't have diabetes, get your blood pressure checked, get your cholesterol level checked. We can measure inflammation levels in the blood work and also measure your hormones level as well because you have low testosterone, that could be a component as well too. And all of those factors I mentioned, condition can be treated, all right, it can be treated. So just know that 90% of ED is physical and only 10% is psychological. And getting the appropriate treatment will depend on what the underlying cause of your ed. The reason why you have ED is decreased blood flow and the treatment is to increase blood flow. And one of the innovative ways to increase blood flow is using platelet rich plasma or your own stem cell from your blood. And that, you know, gets put into the penis to increase more blood fl and using shockwave therapy, which is sound wave therapy and that is delivered to the penis again to increase blood flow. Also taking supplement to increase your nitrous oxide level will also increase blood flow and therefore increase your erection. I have talked about that in my previous podcast episode on nitrous oxide and the supplement for nitrous oxide, I recommend the Mediterranean diet. All those resources are in the show note and I'll put it down in this episode. Again, question question number three. Is ED a symptom of a more serious health problem? In some cases, ED can be a symptom of a more serious health problem, such as heart disease, diabetes and even a nerve problem. If ED is affecting your quality of life and it's been getting worse, do not take prescription medication like Viagra, because when you do take an ED medication, it's only going to make your ED worse and it gets you into a black hole that you can't get out of. It's really putting a band aid on an infected wound because you really need to look at the cause of why you have ed. Now, ED is related to poor blood flow and poor blood flow is also related to a heart attack and getting a stroke, and that's also due to poor blood flow. So once you have ED, studies have shown that about 57% of men seven to 10 years down the road will have a heart attack if you do not address the cause of your ed. And if you continue taking your ED medications such as Viagra or Cialis, you're actually just covering the problem and you're making the blood flow problem worse. So I hope that you hear that loud and clear. You have any question or any comment, I'd love to hear what your thoughts are. Put it down in the comments below. Questions number 8 How does lifestyle affect ED? Lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol use and sedentary lifestyle all contribute to ed. And I want to add on that stress and also sleep as well too. So maintaining a healthy lifestyle such as exercising, doing high intensity interval exercise three hours a week, eating a Mediterranean diet, and keep your alcohol consumption to maybe between seven to ten drinks in a week and also asleep at least seven hours a day and decrease your stress level. When you're stressed, you're stimulating the sympathetic nervous system when you really need to be stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the system you want to be in to get an erection. So doing all of this can help reduce the risk of developing ED. Question number 9 Can ED be prevented? ED can be prevented by making these lifestyle changes that I talked about earlier, as well as managing your stress level, anxiety and also exercise level as well too. It all comes down to Mediterranean diet, getting your regular exercise, getting appropriate sleep and stress management. All of that can go a long way in preventing your ed. If you find out you have ed, know that it can be treated and it also can be prevented. All you have to do is eat a Mediterranean diet, exercise regularly, sleep seven hours a day and avoid smoking as much as you can. Question number 10 are there any new treatment for ED? Yes, I mentioned to it earlier, there are new treatments being developed and tested all the time and at this time the most important treatment that you need to know about is the lifestyle. It's what you eat, how much exercises, and also how many hours you sleep. But I mentioned about using your own stem cell to increase blood flow to your penis as well as using shockwave therapy and using supplement to increase nitrous oxide level and eating food that are full of nitrous oxide, such as green leafy vegetables and beets, that will increase the nitrous oxide, which is a gas in your body, which then stimulate the blood flow. And it's also not only stimulating blood flow to your penis, it will stimulate blood flow to your heart, to your lungs, every organ in the body. So when you're taking care of your erection, you're really taking care of your general health and your longevity and you also will increase heart health as well. And what are you waiting for? Because it's not just bedroom part you're working on is really your whole general overall health. And these are the most 10 common questions that men ask when facing Ed. And I hope that this episode is informative and helpful. You have any further questions? I love to hear from you, so please comment below. I will see you in the next episode.
