The surgeon explains that patients prefer to avoid surgery and that complications from routine cortisone injections motivated exploration of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) as an alternative.

So Dr. Mishra was one of the first doctors to actually use PRP in a clinical setting. And I've always wondered what the backstory is as a surgeon. You do surgery, why all of a sudden, you're looking at another alternative that's not a surgical treatment for tennis elbow?
Well, it's interesting, and I think it's common in medicine sometimes for patients to want to have something new for them. Patients really don't want to have to have surgery. It's not like you wake up in the morning and say, hey, it's my birthday. I want to have surgery today. People were looking for an alternative, myself included, to using cortisone as a treatment for tennis elbow. Tennis elbow is obviously very common. Right. So cortisone, when I was first studying to become an orthopedic surgeon, was obviously one of the most commonly used treatments. But I started seeing people who had complications from cortisone.
