Breathing the right way to activate your parasympathetic system

In this guided session Dr. Priti Nanda Sibal (and participants) walk viewers through a pre‑sleep routine designed to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system and improve sleep quality. The routine begins with lifestyle tips – writing a gratitude journal, avoiding screens, and soaking hands and feet in warm Epsom‑salt water – followed by a concise three‑minute breathing practice called the “Rule of Three.” The practice involves deep diaphragmatic inhalations, a brief hold, and slow exhalations while visualizing oxygen filling trillions of cells and toxins being expelled. Detailed hand placement (hands on abdomen, fingers locked) and posture cues (lying or seated, spine straight) are given. The instructor explains how this breathing shifts the body from sympathetic “fight‑or‑flight” mode to parasympathetic “rest‑and‑digest,” leading to calmer mind, better sleep, reduced stress, and even lower blood‑sugar levels. The session repeats the steps, encourages participants to notice a subtle buzzing sensation in the head, and stresses consistency – no screens an hour before bed, three breaths repeated three times, and regular practice to build the habit.
