How accurate are Thyroid blood Tests?

Dr. Darrell Turner, inventor of the Thyroflex device, argues that standard thyroid blood tests are unreliable and proposes measuring reflex speed and metabolic rate instead, claiming 98.5% diagnostic accuracy. He advocates for bioidentical thyroid hormones containing multiple thyroid compounds over synthetic T4-only treatment, and says his protocol can achieve remission in Hashimoto's within 1.5 to 2 years.

Hi friends, and thank you for joining us at this time in the morning from Food Medicine and Lives. This is the channel we are on now, and I have an amazing scientist, researcher, doctor with me today, Dr. Darrell Turner. So few lines about Dr. Darrell. He actually came out with a machine called Thyroflex, which checks your reflexes and tells you how effective your thyroid functioning is. I've been using his machine now for last 3 months, and I am extremely happy to say that my patients who were stuck before have started moving on. So without wasting any time, I will request Dr. Darryl to share his story about how he launched this machine, what motivated him to bring this in the market. Welcome, Dr. Darryl.
Dr. Preeti, uh, and, um, I enjoy those because I'm so passionate about what I do and how we can help people towards a better quality of life. The reason that I attack the thyroid system, which we commonly call the hypothyroid blues. In other words, most people go for a blood test, they have the symptoms, they walk out untreated, undertreated, or mistreated because the blood tests are not accurate. We are all taught in medical school that the reflexes speed up and slow down reflex function. That's a very well-known fact. In fact, according to the head of the Endocrinology Society in Europe, Dr. Sir Richard Bayliss, he stated a few years ago at the Endocrinology Society annual meeting that none of any of the blood tests, be it T3, T4, free T3, free T4, or TSH, are valid for determining thyroid function. He then went on to say that the only things that you can tell the status of a thyroid, um, on a went on to create a machine that actually measures those 3 things. In other words, we measure the neurotransmitter speeds, we measure the reflex speed, and we measure the resting metabolic rate. When we combine that with the symptoms which we're told about by the patients— and these symptoms, by the way, are from the Endocrinologist Handbook— when we combine those with the symptoms, we get a system that is 98.5% accurate, extremely accurate, not only for determining status of, of your thyroid, but for the very first time being able to put the patient onto the right amount of thyroid, which is also just as important because some patients' symptoms do not really improve until you get them up into the higher dosages of thyroid, knowing that you can only take them at one grain at a time. So 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 grains is the maximum we go to. And this machine tells you exactly how much to put them on and when to stop. So for the first time in people's lives, um, they're able to get onto the right dosage of thyroid, which is also Dr. Preeti?
Yeah, sorry. So, so Dr. Darryl, one interesting thing which you said, which is very hard for me to believe because I am an allopathic doctor, right? And I have been always told that blood panel is enough to diagnose thyroid problems, and you have just now stated that blood panel is not enough.
Well, if you want to believe in the, in the head of the— if you want to believe the head of the endocrinology society in Europe, that blood is not accurate, and by that, that, that is fairly well known and thinking doctors throughout throughout the USA where I'm from and many other places in the world that they just can't get the right answers. In other words, why do patients come into you with all these symptoms, their blood appears to be normal, and you send them home without treatment suffering? It's not right. And of course, we already know from medical school that your reflexes speed up with thyroid function. And according to before, I According to the head of the Endocrinology Society, uh, Dr. Richard Bayliss is also endocrinologist for the Royal Right. Doesn't matter how much you have thyroid hormones, you have in your blood is what the body uptakes. And that is only what— that is only can be measured by the speed of the reflexes, not by blood.
So, Dr. Darryl, I strongly believe what you are saying now, because when I did my Thyroflex test, my reports showed that I had to take not 1 grain but 2 to 3 grains to set myself right.
That's correct. In fact, the historical data back before blood tests became normal in the mid-1970s was the, the average doctor used to put their patient on between 2 and 3 grains, and they did that by hitting their knee while sitting down and judging the speed of the reflexes visually, and by asking the patients a whole lot of questions about their symptoms and they determined back in those days, in the '40s, '50s, '60s, et cetera, how much thyroid you needed. And it was a lot more accurate than what was done today with the blood tests.
Right. Great, Dr. Darryl. Dr. Darryl, another thing which you now use with your patients, and you have treated almost more than 1 million patients till date, maybe even more than that, right? is use of bioidentical thyroid hormone and not synthetic thyroid hormone.
Okay, in our clinical trials, we actually tested everything. We tested over-the-counter, we tested supplements, we tested synthetic, and we tested natural bioidentical thyroid. The synthetic works, works very well initially. But then it loses its effectiveness because the body does not like synthetic. And the synthetic they use is T4 only. What is in the natural bioidentical is T1, T2, T3, T4, and T7. We found that the body needs all that. Once we get them onto the right dose, we're able to maintain the patient on that dose for the rest of their lives, symptomatic-free, which is very important. That word symptomatic-free is very, very important. In other words, the quality of life, once you're on the right dose, 2 or 3 or 4 grains, increases dramatically.
So, Dr. Darryl, have you seen some patients in your practice who have actually reversed their thyroid and are not on any thyroid medication currently?
Very, very rare thyroid. That is in hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is hereditary. You inherit it from your mother, father. But don't forget that a major illness can knock your thyroid out. A major illness or a major— so you may not have thyroid, but it's a very small percentage according to Broda Barnes and according to Terry Hurdock, the number 1 and number 2 thyroid specialists in the world. They postulate that 80% of the entire population in the world has a thyroid disorder. Only a very small percentage of that can be pushed into a thyroid condition. It starts off with a euthyroid and you end up with a thyroid. I have seen that reversed and I have seen people come out of it, but it is a very small and percentage because it is hereditary. And I deal with the DNA and RNA, which we're not going to go into here, but it is a faulty gene. You inherit it from your mother or your father and it comes into the family and it never gets out. In other words, if you, Dr. Priti, are hypothyroid, then I know that your children are, and I know that your mother or father had a thyroid disorder. Whether it was identified or not was another thing. In fact, it's quite strange, Dr. Preeti, if I may talk about you, is Dr. Preeti?
Yeah, we lost you in between, Dr. Darryl. You were speaking something about my reports.
Yes, and you lost your medication and your Thyrofix report showed it immediately because it was showing—
yes, yeah, but Dr. Darryl, imagine I am now going to be 50, you know, and I have never been diagnosed hypothyroid with my blood test reports till now.
And you never, and you never will be.
Yeah, now I never will be because I'm already on medication, so, and I'm hoping that I reverse it soon and get off the medications. Uh, Dr. Darrell, another important—
Okay, okay.
Dr. Darrell, another thing I've seen you doing is use iodine for all thyroid patients. Hypothyroid patients. Okay, but I see that at least among Indian doctors, we do not prescribe iodine. Most of my hypothyroid patients are not on iodine presently.
I will say that again. 98% of all Indians in India are iodine deficient. They don't have enough iodine. It's critical to get iodine into the, into your system. There's a combination of iodine and iodide, not just iodine. Iodine to make the thyroid work. In other words, you have a thing called T4 with 4 ions on, right?
And then we have T3 with 3 iodine.
Yeah. Yes. And that frees up— it frees it up, and it has to go through some receptor pathways that is opened up by D3, K2, which D3 is another hormone, right? Without those basics, the medication will not work. But iodine has other benefits as well. In other words, iodine, right, us from getting breast lumps, which may or may not turn cancerous, or any hot spots or denseness in your breasts. It stops you, uh, getting cysts on your ovaries. And for men, it stops prostate enlargement. All of these things can— is the main surveillance system. So if 98% of all, of all Indian people who live in India have a thyroid disorder, then I definitely would not ignore that.
Dr. Darryl, I in my practice have seen that generally hypothyroid patients have some adrenal stress. And until we manage their adrenals properly, we cannot actually give them optimum, you know, results with their hypothyroidism. What is your take on this?
There are— there— when we balance the thyroid, we cannot do it by itself. We have to balance the iodine, iodide, and the D3. We must balance the stress modulators and the adrenals. The adrenals, if you look at the HPA and the, and the, and if you look at the adrenal axis and the thyroid axis side by side, there are 3 different levels. It can really lead to something called reverse T3, which is, which is precursor to a nervous breakdown known as Addison's and Cushing's and/or Cushing's. But the adrenals play a major interplay with the thyroid, and that is why we must balance the adrenals concurrently with the thyroid as well as the sleep hormones.
Wow. Dr. Darryl, generally, at least in India, majority, I would say everybody You know, still focuses on their blood tests.
Look at this. I, I come to India a lot. I only have to drive on the streets and, uh, and be beeped at by a thousand cars and, uh, and just go for the clamor and noise. And of course that, that's going to happen. Where How can you find a lot of peace and quiet?
Right. So, Dr. Darryl, I remember in one of our conversations you had mentioned that Hashimoto's thyroiditis, you have a protocol to reverse it completely in a matter of 6 to 9 months.
Um, actually it's a little bit longer than that, but okay. We accidentally stumbled across, uh, how to put Hashimoto's not only into remission, but since that time, cure it. Uh, 18% of everyone in the world has Hashimoto's, which is an autoimmune disease. We have protocols for— there are 3 different types. There's Graves', Hashimoto's, and Hashitoxicosis. That's when people have, which affects 0.5% to 1%, they have Hashimoto's and Graves'. That's when we use— that we know that this can be traced back to their inherited DNA. We have RNA protocols for Hashitoxicosis. We have incredible protocols for Graves', but the Hashimoto's, we do it day in and day out with our protocols. We identify, we put it into remission, and we cure it. And that takes 1.5 to 2 years on our treatment program. My wife, who doesn't like to be mentioned in these presentations, but my wife had Had Hashimoto's. Today, when I run the two antibody tests on her, but her joint effusion, her joint pain, Her digestive system, all the cascade of autoimmune responses have all cleared up and have all gone. Her brain's cleared up. It's quite amazing to see once we pull a person out of an autoimmune response, because as you know, once you go into an autoimmune response, it's called the cascade of autoimmune responses. It goes down to Guillain-Barré and it just goes on and on and on. MS. Stop it, right?
Dr. Daryl, one very, very basic question. What are the symptoms which you think patients, if they are having that, they should come and get their Thyroflex done?
But I discovered the how to put it into remission and how to cure it.
Wow. So, Dr. Darryl, I have another question for you. What are the symptoms which you— if patients have, they should come and get Thyroflex done?
Your very obvious symptoms are cold hands. Yeah, you may have two bands around your neck, two parallel bands around your neck. You may have a weight problem between under your breasts, under your hips, maybe called the one, two, or three spare tires. You can feel it quite easy. So weight, of course, is controlled by your thyroid. So you have felt foggy. It really affects the brain in a major way. It's very difficult to do math. You may feel you're clumsy and bump into things. You may feel tired, exhausted, and foggy, and your mood is easy. Um, so it just goes, and you may get depressed. Depression is a big one. So you may get depressed. All those things, any of those things, you must get your thyroid checked. There's an 80% chance that it is your thyroid causing these disorders?
I think one very important symptom which I have seen, uh, going off like this when we, you know, optimize the thyroid is constipation.
Not only constipation, but for your female patients, as you know, thyroid controls your estrogen and your progesterone. Therefore, your menstrual cycles are not going to be regular. They should be The main float should be no more than 3 days, perhaps a little bit of spotting before and after, and no clotting. Clotting is not Normal. No cramping. That's not normal. So for a woman, it's a lot easier to pick up because it affects the estrogen and progesterone as well as constipation. Why constipation? Because the whole body is slow. The whole body slows down. So the food— the digestive tract cannot push the food through at the proper rate. That's why not only is your heart slow, your heart rate's slow, your whole body, your digestion is slow, your reflexes instead of being like this, they're slow like this. It goes on. Your brain is slow. It slows your whole body down and down and down. And over time it gets worse and worse and worse and worse and worse. So the quality of your life disappears. We're talking not about talking about you you living any longer. We're talking about you living with a high quality of life, Dr. Priti.
I can experience that. I am experiencing that, Dr. Darryl. So I can, you know, actually promise everybody that quality of life really can improve if thyroid is managed better. And thank you, Dr. Darryl, for your time. And thank you for coming out with this amazing machine and now making it available in India. And I am sure this will help us be more happy, more active, and more fit.
Dr. Preeti, thank you very much for those beautiful compliments. As I, I'm a very old doctor and, and I keep on doing this lives today, and I know I'm going to improve the quality of hundreds of thousands of people today with my protocols. I love doing it. Thank you very much for having me on your show.
Thank you, Dr. Darryl, and have a wonderful day.
Thank you. Bye-bye.
