Immunity session 13

Dr. Preeti leads a wellness session on immune function, covering stress, hormonal imbalance, gut health, and over-training. The core practice is diaphragmatic breathing: sit with a straight spine, hands on stomach, and notice abdominal movement during each breath. Do this for 2 minutes daily for 11 days to shift your nervous system and reduce stress.

Hi. Hello, how are you? I'm very good. How are you? Oh, fine. Perfect. Just give me a minute, I have to get my Yes. Hello, Kamal Ji. Hello, Preeti Ji. Anji. So, Yeah, that's right. Exactly. Very good. Right. Oh, very good, very good. Or we have missed one, two. Actually, day before yesterday we have not attended, we forgot. Okay. Okay, okay, okay. Dance, but dance, because our family, our family itself is very famous for dance. Wow! But aerobics plus dance, you will like it. And right, frankly, exercise, light dinner. No, no, not that way. I've started taking a lot of water, which I used to take before also. Okay, so, but that doesn't help. Kada is very important. Okay, I'll do it today. So I'll tell you why kada is very important, because it's a mix of herbs and spices, and Viral immunity help, but more importantly, body detox. Okay, yeah, sure, right. Patients, and then they say, is it because of this? Yes, I don't have any answer for that. No, no, no. Yes, so I'll tell you a very interesting case. But interestingly, patient IIT color, diabetic, 30 years. So he came to me. As human beings, Right? It is like, hello, so nice to see you. So I've heard so much appreciation about your talks, you know. I thank you so much. Thank you, thank you so much. Is my classmate. She's here online with me. She will know. Medical college. I'm a dermatologist and a cosmetologist. I'll give my introduction, right? I'm a dermatologist, cosmetologist, right? Exactly. Let's look at that PPT, last slide, immunity. So 30 minutes back, I was speaking to Amar and I told Amar, Amar, kal maina apne sare participants ko gift dena chati ho. So he said what? Definitely, definitely. Yeah. Hello, Jyoti. I think Jyoti can't hear me, right? Yeah, yeah, I can hear you now. Okay, so how are things going for you? Great, great. Good. I was waiting for you only to start on the PPT, Jyoti. Yeah, thank you so much. Yes, I'm just— no, no, no, no, no, no, we just met during this, uh, this thing. But yeah, but she's been regular, and therefore, you know, it's always good to see people who are regular with yourself. Yes, so I'm going to share my screen with you now. Yeah, hello. Sorry, I'm hearing everything. Perfect. Yes, so let's start here. So we were on insomnia yesterday when we left. Right. Okay, anemia, infections, we covered those. Insomnia, insomnia is when we are not able to sleep properly. Either we are not able to sleep when we get— go on the bed. Lot of people come and say we keep tossing and we can't sleep for long time before, you know, in the night. Sometimes people sleep on time but they get up in the midnight, right? And sometimes people keep thinking lots of thoughts during night. All those things, if not corrected well, take us closer to getting diseased and it decreases the— our immune system. The next point is stress, and we have discussed stress. So of course, added stress Does impact our immune system. Hormones, hormones imbalance is a big, big problem these days and it is affecting our immune system in a big way. Now when I say this, what do I mean? Hormones get affected by our mental thoughts, right? Hormones, if we keep stay under stress, hormones get affected. And in one of these sessions we will talk about how Stress impacts hormones, but there are certain other things which are not in our control and they also impact hormones, such as pesticides in the food. The wheat we get today is so laden with urea and pesticides that sometimes our body is not able to take everything out or detoxify properly, and that leads to xenoestrogens or imbalance of hormones. The pollution in the air, the quality of water, all these things impact our hormones. So very, very important. Then we discuss dysbiosis. Now, what is dysbiosis? Dysbiosis means our gut is not functioning properly. And as we discussed yesterday, it is becoming very, very common these days, and it is resulting into food allergies, into symptoms like constipation, diarrhea, bloating, acidity. A lot of people these days know what acidity is. We never used to know what acidity is when we were in college, right? But these days, even young kids know what is acidity. Yesterday, my son came to me and said, Mom, do you know a good gastroenterologist? I said, what happened? He says, Mom, my best friend He is having a lot of acidity for last 4 months. He is not able to— his quality of life is getting impacted. Now imagine a 23-year-old boy feeling acidic all the time. We are doing something wrong, right, which we need to correct. And the last point which I want to bring our attention to is overtraining. How many of us think overtraining is good? Of course not, of course not. But a lot of us actually can't limit it. So when we say overtraining, who will tell me how do we define overtraining? How much when you do, you should be happy with yourself? Your mathematics is very good, Kamal. So, right, so 45 minutes a day is said to be a good time which you spend on your body when you exercise, right? Now the WHO And the cardiac societies, they are saying that if you can divide that in 15, 15, 15 minutes during the day, it is even better. Okay. Because they say 45 minutes once a day and then a sedentary life throughout the day doesn't serve any purpose. Okay. So if you exercise for 45 minutes in the morning or in the evening Remember, you have to be active throughout the day, right? So two basic minimum things which we should start doing is: one, always get up when you feel thirsty. Do not keep a bottle on your table, and do not get into the habit of saying, please give me water. No, make sure that you get up, get your glass of water every time you feel thirsty. One. Second, always make it a habit that you will keep your utensils in the kitchen yourself, right? Why I'm saying these two things? Because these two things you do every day, right? So some people come to me and say that, you know, I— every night I plan that I will exercise, but every Every morning I keep sleeping. How many of us have this complaint with ourselves? Right, some of us have. So what happens is, if you connect it with something you are going to do, for example, if you connect it with that you will brush your teeth and immediately after brushing your teeth you will keep your shoes outside your washroom, put on your shoes and go out, come what may, you don't care. You will see that your adherence to your plan will improve substantially, right? So overtraining is not good. I was also sharing with Anu that day that in girls who gain a lot of weight and we are suspecting that they have polycystic ovarian syndrome, those girls should not do gymming at all. If they do for 30 minutes, it is okay. But what happens is they generally start liking it and they continue for an hour and then 1.5 and 2 hours. This results in increase in testosterone and they never lose weight. So they come to you saying, ma'am, I exercise for 2 hours, I don't eat anything throughout the day, and my weight is still stuck. You shift them from gymming to breathing And the weight starts going away. No other change, right? So please remember that these are the few very basic things which we should remember when we are thinking about our immune system, right? So today I want to test all of you. Are we ready for the test? Yes, right, which is good also. But the test I'm going to take today has the potential of changing your life, and I am telling you seriously, because this is something you do 25/7 from the minute you are born till the minute you are dead. What is it? Breathing. Yes, yes. So I am going to now find out who all among you breathe under stress and who all breathe when they— and they are not stressed. Do you know how to find this out? No, no, no, no, no. I also didn't know. I also didn't know for a long time. Yes, Jyoti, you're wanting to say something. Yes, uh, you taught us breathing, right? Right. So same. So breathing is a— it's very important that we breathe properly. And you know what? If we know how to breathe, then we get to know the biggest lesson of our life. What is that lesson of life? At least to me, that lesson of life is if you take one handful, you have to give two handfuls. So our ancestors used to tell us this, that a happy person is not one who takes, a happy person is one who gives, right? And my father always says this, that Preeti, so I'll first say in Punjabi because he talks in Punjabi. Preeti, hath to adda ek daan changa hai. Jais de ne ek daan ho gya na, us din samjo garbar ho gaye zindagi chaa. So your hand is always better when it is giving. If you have to ask for something in your life, it means you have done some mistake. So whatever you do, whatever you plan, make sure your hand always stays like this. Right, and this lesson breathing teaches us, and breathing reminds me all the time. And let's see how. So please sit straight with your spine straight, your feet on the ground, and your spine exactly straight. So it should be so straight that you feel, you know, that you are not twisting or bending or something like that. Perfect. Keep your hands on your thigh— keep your hands on your stomach. Fold your hands like this, interlock them, and keep them on your stomach. Breathe. Take a deep breath in. Take a deep breath out. So all of you now tell me, Kamalji, when you took your breath in, where did your stomach go? Out or in? Out. Out. So where did your wife's stomach go? Let me see. Out. Okay, so Tejinder, where did your stomach go? My stomach went in when I breathed in. Right. Anu, where did yours go? It was stable, my chest moved. Ha! Deepak, where did yours go? So what I want to tell you is All those whose abdomen did not come out, they are— they are currently stressed. So, and when I say stressed, I mean your sympathetic nervous system is active. Okay, right. And sympathetic nervous system active means Yes. So when we breathe, please note, when you inhale, it has to come out, and when you exhale, it has to go in and touch your spine. Now my second question— it will. You have to practice that because otherwise it means that your sympathetic system is so active. That it is not allowing you to breathe properly. Kamal ji, where did your shoulders go when you breathed in? Actually, frankly, I didn't notice. I'll have to just check it out. Just check it again. Very important. Please breathe and tell me where do your shoulders go when you breathe in and where do your shoulders go when you breathe out. Anu, you also tell me. Shoulders. Oh, moment. When you breathe in, where did your shoulders go, Kamal ji? Up. Up. And Anu, where did yours? Slightly up. So today you have to send a message to me, all of you, and do not miss sending this message. And in the message you have to write, thank you, Dr. Preeti, for helping me breathe correctly. Please send this message because none of you are breathing correctly. Let me tell you, when you blow a balloon, what happens? When you fill the air in it, the balloon size decreases. Yes, yes, right? And when you take the air out of the balloon, the balloon becomes taller. Yes, yes, our abdomen is like a balloon. When we breathe in— look at me carefully, please look at me carefully— when I breathe in, my shoulders go down like a balloon. We can easily see, we can see properly. Okay, so I don't know how to use this. Wait, that's done, it's done. Okay, perfect. So, so you tell us how to— right, so I'm going to breathe. Just look at my shoulders and I will stand so that you can look at my stomach and shoulders both, right? Yeah. Did you notice when my abdomen was coming? We couldn't see you. We couldn't. Now you repeat because Anuji was on the screen. Just a minute then. Now it is okay. Now you are on the screen. Now I'm on the screen? No. Yeah, now it is okay. Yeah, yeah, actually it is shifting from one person to another. I don't know how. Ah, wait, now it has shifted to ma'am. Now, now it's okay. Now it's okay. Now it's okay. Yes, perfect. So can you see my abdomen and my shoulders? Yes, yes, yeah. I'm breathing in now. See, my abdomen has come out, my shoulders have gone down. Now I'm breathing out. Now I'm breathing in. Now I'll breathe out. In, out. Did you see it? Yes, we have seen it, but point is this: when we will do it consciously, then only it is possible. No, yeah, it was not otherwise. Yes, so it, it was not possible because till today nobody has I have taught you how to breathe. For the next 11 days, I'll tell you, next 11 days you will be conscious of how are you are breathing 2 minutes every day. How many minutes? 2 minutes. Yes. After 11 days, you will never have to monitor yourself. You will know when you are under stress, your breathing will change. And let me give you a very important tip before I end this meeting. Before you go to any meeting where you think you are getting stressed, before your kids are going for an exam, before you know that you are going to have a fight today, just do this breathing for 2 minutes. Your sympathetic will shift to parasympathetic so quickly. That the output of your meeting will change. And I am not saying this, this has been studied for more than 20 years. This is documented. And remember, when we breathe in, we hold our breath, but when we exhale, breathe out, we have to take 3 tries on breathing out. Spine and stomach should try and appear one. Why? Because if you exhale more than what you inhale, only then you will be able to keep your body oxygenated. And we all know we need oxygen for the functioning of ourselves. Yeah. Yeah, so please remember that when you inhale, it's fine, but when you exhale, do it once more, once more. Practice this. Tomorrow when we start the session, we will start with this breathing again. Yes, yes. Shoulders. If you learn this breathing, this is equal to meditation. But in this, you have nothing to worry. Only with this breathing, sugar levels, you've done something good for me, I want to give you a gift, right? Right, right. So if one thing you have to practice, date or time, not message. Right, right, sure, sure. Please do this, do not miss this. And time, 30 seconds, Bye-bye. It was very nice meeting you all, and I look forward to seeing you. Thank you, and thanks for joining. Thanks for joining. Bye-bye. Take care. Bye-bye.
