In this video Dr. Priti Nanda Sibal outlines thirteen key health benefits of the trace mineral selenium and provides practical guidance on testing and supplementation. She explains selenium’s central role in glutathione synthesis for liver detoxification, its antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory actions, and its necessity for converting thyroid hormone T4 to T3, noting that patients on thyroid medication often need selenium for optimal response. Selenium is presented as a fertility enhancer (improving sperm quality and egg environment), an anti‑cancer agent, and a promoter of hair growth via thyroid support. The speaker highlights selenium’s protective effects against alcohol‑related liver damage, Alzheimer’s disease, and heavy‑metal toxicity (arsenic and mercury), and its utility in autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto’s, benign prostatic hyperplasia, insulin resistance/diabetes, and vitiligo (by balancing H₂O₂). She recommends the non‑invasive Oligoscan test to assess selenium status, cites the recommended dietary allowance of 55 µg, typical supplemental dosing of 200 µg (cautioning against >400 µg due to toxicity), and advises using selenomethionine as the preferred supplement form. Food sources listed include Brazil nuts, eggs, and shrimp. The video concludes with a call to check selenium levels and supplement responsibly for overall health.

13 benefits of selenium. We all know selenium is a very important trace metal in our body, and it works as cofactors and helps improve our immune system. Let's look at 13 very, very important benefits selenium Selenium offers us in our body. Most importantly, selenium is a part of making glutathione, and we know glutathione is the material or substance which is used to detoxify our body, especially liver. 2, selenium decreases the free radicals released in the body, so it acts as an anti-inflammatory and helps keep our body clean. Third, T4 gets converted into T3 for the thyroid to work. Work actively in our body. Selenium plays an important role there. In fact, in my practice, I often see that patients who are taking thyroid but are not taking selenium fail to get the optimum response which they should when on thyroid medication. Fertility— adding selenium to the protocol can help a lot of couples conceive. It improves the sperm quality in men and improves the quality of egg and the fluid around that in women. 5. Selenium has anti-cancerous properties, and therefore we must have optimum levels of selenium in our body. Hair growth— by correcting thyroid, selenium helps in having good hair. So all women or men with lot of hair loss should check their selenium levels. Alcohol-related liver Alzheimer's disease is again something where selenium plays a very, very important role, and of course its effect in making glutathione is the backbone of this effect. Poisoning. Arsenic poisoning. Selenium can help you get toxic arsenic out of your body. In fact, when I do oligoscan, in lot of my patients I see high arsenic. The major culprit is basically high arsenic in rice which we eat. Having good amount of selenium can help us keep our arsenic levels within balance. Autoimmune conditions— Hashimoto's as well as other autoimmune conditions— selenium helps improve our immune system strongly. It works as a cofactor, as an enzyme, and it protects against oxidative damage, hence resulting in very, very good benefit in autoimmune conditions. Benign prostatic hyperplasia hypertrophy. Again, selenium can help in these patients. Diabetes— selenium impacts the insulin resistance, and therefore diabetics must know their selenium levels and always keep it optimal. Mercury— mercury toxicity, we know it really hampers your health, especially your brain health. The fish we eat actually increases mercury, but these days we are seeing mercury much in many, many more patients, and one big reason is also dental fillings. Having good amount of selenium helps detoxify or remove mercury from your body, and it has lot and lot more benefits, but I want to talk about one more benefit which it has, that is vitiligo. In vitiligo patients, H2O2 produced is very high, and selenium helps balancing it, and therefore the bleaching effect of H2O2 which leads to vitiligo can be corrected. And therefore, all these patients must make sure that they get their selenium checked. How can you get your selenium checked? We have a very beautiful non-invasive test, Oligoscan. Which can actually check your selenium and help you know what are the levels of selenium in your body. During COVID times, I think most of us have had selenium supplements, and if not, we must check our selenium levels and have these supplements. The recommended dietary allowance for selenium in human body is 55 micrograms, but when we supplement, we give it to 200 micrograms daily. Of course, we should never give it more than 400 micrograms because it can lead to toxicity. The best form of selenium in which selenium should be taken, if taken as a supplement, is selenomethionine. Please make sure this is what you are taking. And the good sources are Brazil nuts, eggs, shrimp, And of course, supplements. All the best. Stay healthy, stay happy.
