Dr. Betty Murray explains how gut bacteria affect hormone levels through the estrobolome, a collection of microbes that influence estrogen availability. An imbalanced gut may alter how your body processes and recycles hormones, though research is still sparse. Your hormones and gut work as one system, not separately.

We also look at the microbiome and the estrobolome. What things do you think we'll likely see if somebody has kind of a jacked up dysbiotic gut? I would think that we would see variations in concentration of hormones or availability of hormones because there is this symbiotic back and forth relationship, but there's a lack of research here.
Yeah. You know, understanding that in treatment, the body, not just about the concentration of the hormone increasing in your tissue, in your blood. Your body has to transport it, it has to metabolize it, it has to conjugate it, it has to recycle it, it has to eliminate it. So there's this whole process that still has to be done with that. And so that's why I really like to think about how we're combining endocrine biology with gut biology.
