25: How to Alleviate Feeling Overwhelmed
25 Jun 2021 · 2 min
A short motivational podcast episode by Drew Canole about alleviating feelings of overwhelm. Canole reframes overwhelm as a product of our relationship with time and low energy (not lack of time), contrasts being "busy" with being "overwhelmed," and offers a concrete exercise: write down everything you need to do (week to month), label/prioritize it so unknowns become known, then check your body by sitting in presence to notice how perspective shifts. He also emphasizes energy management (gut/mitochondria, mood) and using language ("I get to" vs "I have to") to reduce burden.

Hey, my friend. Welcome to the Drew and you show. I'm excited about this short show today because this theory, this topic, this idea changed my life. And I hope, I pray that this changes your life as well, in a good way. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Do you feel like there's way too much stuff to do? Are you feeling burnt out? Are you feeling stressed out? If you are, you're not alone. Know that this is a program, program that's been installed on Western humanity for the past hundred years, right? With the industrialization, with the techno innovations that we've had, it's the do, do, do. It's the hustle, hustle, hustle. It's the grind, grind, grind, where it is a badge of honor. Look at how much I can get done throughout the day. Look at me. I'm a human being on a giant human hamster wheel. Like the story of the hungry caterpillar just trampling over each other. Try to get to the top of this proverbial tree, all the while forgetting what we really are, who we really are, and why our souls here in the first place. So another. Another time for another story, another topic. But how do we deal with overwhelm? Number one, we have to start asking ourselves, what is our relationship like with time? Are we slaves to time? Are we bending time? Are we keepers of the clock? Do we know how to really leverage time? I believe energy is the greatest asset we have as human beings. It's not time, because if you're tired, if your mitochondria is not firing right, microbiota is all jacked up. You're not getting any serotonin fired to your brain, which is 90% coming from your gut, then your time is going to move differently than if you feel alive, feel energetic, you feel like moving, feel like momentum is being built up, you're seeing the world through the rosy colored glasses, right? And that's how I love to live my life. I'm constantly looking around, why aren't they having as much fun as I am as I'm out in public? Maybe at the airport. People watching at the airport is the best, by the way.
So fun and. Yeah. So how do we become keepers of our own time? Well, number one, we have to really start to begin to slow time down. How does time speed up? Time speeds up when we feel overwhelmed. And the reason we feel overwhelmed is because our life likened to a target. Let's pretend you're an archery target. For lack of a better analogy. I've been out shooting my bow, my recurve bow. It's a lot of fun, by the way. And you have all these arrows flying at the target. These arrows are the things that you feel like you need to do. So they're, they're labeled out. Let's say you have 20 to 30 arrows flying at you and they're just in the air, right? You haven't labeled them. So you feel overwhelmed. The difference between busy and overwhelmed, being busy. You have the same amount of stuff to do, but you know what you need to do and you've made the list, you've emptied it out like a trash can on a piece of paper, on an Excel spreadsheet, whatever it is, in a habit tracking app. And you know what needs to be done and you kind of feel like the order of what needs to be done is there as well. So now you're just busy. The reason people feel overwhelmed is there's way too much stuff that you don't know, that you don't know. You haven't gotten it all out of your system. So in today's short episode, I want you to take some time. I want you to write down everything that you have to do over the next week, two weeks, month. And then at the end of it, I want you to analyze your body. Just sit in a state of presence, allow your seat to disappear.
And just be floating in the eternal. And then feel how good it feels just to simply sit. Try not to label it meditation or anything like that when we give it labels. The mind likes to hold you into a state of third dimensional existence. You are beyond all that you are awareness. And the more we can observe what gets to be done right, what's. And that's a whole nother thing is shifting your perception around, feeling like you have to do all these things. That feels heavy, right? I am elated. I am blessed. I feel so joyous to simply do what I get to do today. So using different vernacular around that, that's a little thing we went through in ala, Ascension Leadership Academy. You guys haven't heard of that? Check it out. Emotionally intelligent workshop. Emotional intelligent workshop. I'm so emotionally intelligent. It's actually legit. I did it in California, sent like 50 employees and everybody gets to do, do the work, but that'll help you. So the difference between overwhelm and busy, simply knowing what needs to be done, writing it down, having a plan for getting it done, building up momentum, like into creating the best life possible. So sit in that space, see how much better you feel. Come back tomorrow, I'll have another. Not tomorrow, but I believe it'll be Friday. We've been changing the podcast schedule up. Let me know if you want, like, a podcast four or five days a week. We can pick up the intensity here. If you want deeper, longer, more impactful podcasts, we can also do that as well. I just love waking up in the morning and saying what's on my mind, what's on my heart. And I know so many people are feeling overwhelmed right now. You don't have to. It's not your burden to bear. You can feel free. You can know that everything will get done that needs to get done. Anyway, Drew Canole. Remember, we're in this together. We'll see you soon.
