What Is The Science of Change?
28 Jan 2026 · 2 min
Short podcast episode excerpt introducing the Science of Change podcast. Kristen Berman (behavioral scientist and co‑founder of Irrational Labs) and others discuss the difficulty of changing habits, explain the podcast’s goal to examine how companies design for behavior change, and preview topics and firms to be covered (e.g., Duolingo, WeightWatchers, Credit Karma, Peloton). The tone is conversational and exploratory, positioning the show as a practical look "under the hood" at behavior‑change design.
I actually don't even know the whole premise. Is it mainly about behavioral science? Is that the.
Yeah, we're calling it signs of change. Behavior change is hard. It is incredibly difficult to change our behavior. If you've ever tried to start a habit, tried to start meditating or go on a diet, you know that it sounds a little bit easier than it actually is. So why is that the people who may have a small hint at what actually works could be hiding the apps that we use every day.
We're onto something.
No, you're onto a lot. You've nailed it. The Science of Change podcast is a look under the hood of companies that are focused on behavior change. How they do it, what they do, and why it works, and many times why it doesn't work.
Oh, care cells don't work.
Great.
Is the other potential contrary in view? We've landed on.
You heard it here first.
Yes.
My name is Kristen Berman. I'm a behavioral scientist. I co founded a company called Irrational Labs with Dan Ariely, thinking that we'd bring behavioral science into the hearts and minds of companies looking to change behavior for good. In this podcast, we're talking to the people who are actually on the ground.
Streak has been a part of duolingo almost from day one.
Leaders from Weight Watchers.
A lot of the things that we want people to do that are healthy are just not as enjoyable, but you can make them more enjoyable.
So the gold standard would be making carrots sexy or something? Yeah. Peloton.
We're very much inspired by behavior that already exists and then making easier credit karma. We're trying to change your relationship with.
Money and dozens of other companies making these apps work. Sometimes these companies are teaching us about how they change behavior and sometimes we're able to help them understand how and why something that they're already doing works.
I never made that connection. I think it's apt.
I should think more about this.
I've never heard that. I'm writing it down because I explore, exploit, bringing that to the team.
Tonight we'll deep dive into the psychologies of eating, of sleeping, of exercise, of financial behaviors and unlock the secrets behind the science of change. Oh, that's nice. Unlock the secrets behind the science of change. Secrets is good.
