Anti-Aging and Oral Care

Dr. Sanda Moldovan (periodontist and nutritionist) argues that oral health is central to anti-aging: an unhealthy mouth contributes systemic infections (affecting joints, heart, lungs, brain) and ages appearance. She outlines diagnostic and treatment options—CT imaging, laser detoxification, safer whitening, tooth remineralization—and emphasizes prevention and a healthy mouth as foundational for a vibrant, infection-free life.

Hi, I'm Dr. Sanda. I'm a periodontist and I'm also a nutritionist. And one of the things that I do is full mouth rehabilitation. We take patients in our office from really broken down teeth to a vibrant, healthy smile. And that's the key. When it comes to the topic of anti aging, we really also need to look at the mouth. I was recently at a conference in Vegas for the anti aging medicine and we had thousands of doctors and nobody brought up the topic of mouth and oral health when it comes to anti aging. You know, when you look at somebody, you meet that one person, you automatically our eyes go to their teeth and you notice that they have yellow stains and they're worn down teeth. We automatically make a certain assumption about that patient one, we know that worn down teeth has to do with stress. And stress really ages usually. And also the yellow stains give that impression that it's just a person is not healthy. And let alone when we see receded gums and bleeding gums, it's definitely not a good look. But what can we do to not only reverse this, but treat it? And not only just for looks, but anti aging. And when I think about anti aging, it's not just a superficial look, it's how do we keep a healthy mouth? Because if we have a healthy mouth, then we have a healthy body. A lot of infections that we can find around the teeth can actually spread throughout our body. So bacteria is known to travel to joints which can get inflamed and ultimately get replaced, such as hips and knees. We know bacteria from the mouth travels there. We also know bacteria travels to the heart, it lodges onto the heart valves, it travels to the lungs. We know that there's a higher risk of pneumonia in people who have periodontal disease. It can travel to the brain. People who have abscesses that are close to the sinus, it can travel and cause abscesses in the brain if left untreated. So the mouth is really the number one source of infection and we really need to talk about it and pay attention to it if we want to live a healthy life that's infection free and it's really vibrant. Because if our mouth is not healthy, then we cannot talk about anti aging. We have several options today to recognize the infections in the mouth using a CT scan, doing the anti aging treatments such as laser detoxification, safer teeth whitening that we can have in the office, remineralization of the teeth so we don't get the wear that we otherwise would get on the teeth as we age and really protecting them. Prevention is really the key when it comes to anti aging because if you have a small that just glows, we know that person is healthy. We just automatically make that assumption.
