Why Dentists Drink Ozone Water

Dr. Sanda Moldovan explains how dentists use ozonated water for antimicrobial rinses and systemic benefits. Modern generators produce 10 ppm for professional use and 3 ppm for home devices. Patients can safely drink 4-6 oz of 10 ppm water for oxygenation and GI detox.

Ozone water might be one of the most overlooked tools in dentistry for reducing bacteria and improving oral health. Here's how and when to use it. I love the taste of ozone water. I don't know if you've ever gotten a chance to try it, but I highly recommend it. So in our office, how do we make ozonated water? I remember when I first started into a holistic and biological dentistry, we actually had an ozone tank. We had a line that bubbled ozone inside the water for about 20 minutes, and then we'd have to use this water in the beaker to basically use as a rinse for patients, as that microbial agent while we're doing scaling and root planing or any procedures inside the tooth. But luckily today we actually have a much better instant ozone water maker in the office where we literally press a button and through the process of electrolysis we're able to get 10 parts per million ozonated water. And by the way, not all ozone water is created equal. There's different concentrations. So just make sure you know if you're going to the dentist as a patient, what kind of ozonated water are they using? What kind of concentration are they using? For ozonated water. And also, if you're buying a device for home use, I know there's all kinds of ozone water makers out there, but by just sticking ozone and bubbling it for a minute, that really doesn't do anything for the water, okay? It's very, very weak. So 10 parts per million is more about professional use. Can you drink 10 parts per million? Absolutely. Just make sure you don't actually go in and sniff it because it might make you cough. And I wouldn't drink more than 4 to 6 ounces of it, and typically when I drink it, I actually get energy from it because it is oxygenating. But another thing that it's doing, it's actually detoxifying the GI tract. That's why I love to use it as a mouthwash, especially pre-procedural rinse for my surgeries. It is antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic, and it's antiviral. So I usually have my patients swish and swallow. There's really no reason to actually spit it out. But also there's another way to make ozone water at home. This is a tumbler that I talked about this before. This is an empty one, but basically has some plates inside that are helping the water undergo electrolysis to create O3 inside the water. So this is a 2 to 3 minute treatment. You fill it up with water, you press the button, and in 3 minutes we have about 3 parts per million concentrated ozone water. And not as strong, of course, as 10 parts per million. However, still effective for home use. So I recommend patients get this, especially if they have cavities, to use it in a water flosser. That's really the best way to use ozonated water at home. But what about in the dental office? What do we do with this amazing water? Well, because now it's on an instant and we can just press a button and get ozone water, we actually put it in the dental units. All dental units have a, have a bottle nowadays and we fill our bottles with ozonated water. So anytime our patients are here, they're getting even a cleaning, they're actually getting ozonated water every time. And another benefit on running ozonated water inside the dental units We actually tested our dental water lines because they can get pretty dirty. However, our water lines are pristine because of the use of ozonated water inside the water lines of each dental chair.
