Short YouTube episode by Dr. Sanda Moldovan giving practical advice for preventing and treating osteoporosis. Emphasizes lifestyle measures (especially weight-bearing exercise and an alkalinizing diet) and discusses two medical-food supplements—Oxiaben (claimed to increase bone mineral density ~10% in the first three years) and Ostenol (claimed to raise circulating bone morphogenic proteins/BMPs)—as evidence-backed nutritional supports.

Hi everyone, I'm Dr. Sandha and as promised, I'm going to bring you in this episode nutritional support for osteoporosis. A lot of you probably think that once you have osteoporosis there's nothing you can do about it, but that's wrong. Actually having a good lifestyle matters. So what's a good lifestyle when it comes to osteoporosis is exercising and definitely weight exercises to help keep the bone density as well as alkalinizing your diet. So why does osteoporosis form? And it starts really in our 20s and 30s, so it's a problem that it doesn't get discovered for years. And once we have osteoporosis it takes also years to reverse. So the best thing is prevention and taking some medical foods or nutritional supplements before we're even diagnosed with osteoporosis. We have some medical foods that are very important in treating osteoporosis. And what are medical foods, you may ask? They're actually nutritional supplements that have research to back up their claims. And Oxiaben is one such a medical food which helps with osteoporosis. And it has studies to show that in the first three years it can increase the bone mineral density 10%. We don't have any medication that would actually do this. The other nutritional supplement that we have is called Ostenol and acenol actually has been shown to increase the bone morphogenic proteins or BMPs inside the blood. And these bone morphogenic proteins, when they circulate, they increase bone mineral density. So it's a product that I do recommend to take. It is not vegetarian, but they both have research to back up their claims. The other thing you could do is alkalinize your diet. What does that mean? If you're eating acid forming foods such as a lot of meat and starches, it'll ca cause your body to leach mineral from the bone into the bloodstream to maintain balance. However, if you eat more alkaline forming foods such as dark leafy greens, algae, salad, cabbage, vegetables like that, even limes, lemons and citrus are alkaline forming even though they're acidic themselves. You can help reverse or keep your minerals in your bones where they belong. So if you have any questions, please tweet me at askdrsondra and I'll see you next week.
