Dr. Victoria Veytsman explains her collaborative approach to smile makeovers: combining her clinical/aesthetic expertise with each patient’s wants to design veneers and smiles. She highlights material choices (multiple layered colors, added translucency), decisions about tooth shape, size, and smile width, and how these aesthetic choices can influence others’ perceptions (e.g., rounded teeth read as more feminine).

It's really weaving my guidance, my expertise that I've accumulated over the years, and what the patient's wants and needs are. That's how we really create. It's definitely a collaborative process with patients. I really appreciate how my patients trust my aesthetic, where I can guide it along just because I've done this so much. It's weaving my guidance, my expertise that I've accumulated over the years and what the patient's wants and needs are, and that's how we really create. We have several materials that we can use. All of the colors that we use for our veneers are not just one color. They're actually a combination of several. We add beautiful translucency to most of our cases so that they look natural. There is definitely choices when it comes to the shapes of the teeth, size of the teeth, the width of the smile, and how that impacts the face. The shapes of the teeth, too, kind of subconsciously give people a message. For instance, rounded teeth may give the perception of a more feminine personality, whereas something a little straighter across without too much curvature could be a little bit more of a masculine smile. Even the personality personality of the patient or the personality they're trying to portray, because people make subconscious decisions about other people based on how they look, and they may not even realize it. A lot of that has to do with the smile, especially with people that come in with smiles that have been neglected for a long time. I hear the stories about how they're treated or how they're perceived when they go to a job or social situations. The nice thing is that we can change all that.
