Welcome to the High Income Business Writing Podcast, helping you propel your writing business to a whole new level. And now, here's your host, Ed Gandia.
Hey there. Welcome to the High Income Business Writing Podcast. I am your host, Ed Gandia, and this is the podcast for business writers and copywriters who want to earn more and less time doing work they love for better clients. This episode is a little different and much shorter than usual rather than my typical 45 minute format. Today I'm sharing a quick tip with you and this is part of the regular audio insights that I publish for my private coaching clients. I just thought you'd find it helpful. So here we go. I hope you enjoy it. One of the worst things you could do for your mindset and mental health as a writer or copywriter is is to obsess over low cost providers out there. Whether they're individual writers and copywriters. Maybe they're overseas, maybe they're in North America, but they're charging way less than what you do. Or these content marketing firms and companies that sell these ridiculously low packages that make you want to scream. Here's the thing. I get it, okay? It's frustrating to see the commoditization of content marketing in copywriting, but it's an inevitable trend that you can do nothing about. And the worst thing you can do is to stew over something that you have no control over. And what I would say is your energy and your time is much better off spent on focusing on improving your business. And I know that might sound like a bunch of motivational hogwash, but let me give you an example of another market where this is not an issue, okay? I want you to think about a fine restaurant, something that, you know, maybe you go to this restaurant every couple of years or maybe once a year on your anniversary or a birthday. This is a splurge meal. I want you to think of that restaurant. And then I want you to ask yourself, does the chef or owner worry that there's probably a McDonald's within a five square mile area of the restaurant or several McDonald's restaurants? The answer is of course not. Okay? They know they're in a totally different category, okay? They don't compete with McDonald's. And in fact, sometimes I would even say in that example, some other diners go to McDonald's occasionally. But is their business hurt because yet another McDonald's or another fast food restaurant open within a few blocks distance? They're not concerned. I want you to think of yourself as a fine dining establishment. Something where you're creating art, you're creating great value for your clients. And to compare yourself with somebody who's charging 10 or 20% of what you normally charge is counterproductive. Now, if you're saying yes, Ed, the problem is they're going after the same market with the Same services for 10 cents on the dollar of what I charge, then it's time to rethink whom you're going after and how you're positioning yourself. Fact is, there's always going to be distinction there. You have to work on creating that distinction for your prospects. Otherwise they're just going to think you're the same.
