Cash flow and budgets for home improvement projects

John shows how to schedule four home projects (kitchen remodel, office furnishings, bedroom carpeting, patio) across 2012-2014 using HomeZada's planning tool. You assign dates to each project and see a bar chart of spending by year, so you can spread costs and actually afford the work.

Hi, I'm Beth with HomeZada. Most of us have a hard time balancing what home improvement projects we want versus what we can actually afford. Let's see how HomeZada can help plan out the cash flow and budgets of your wish list of projects.
Alright, we're at the All My Projects page where we can see our 4 wish list projects, but HomeZada also allows you to cash flow those out over a number of years. So you can see here on the My Project Planning page All 4 of my projects show up in one year in 2012, and it's $61,000, and that's something that we clearly can't afford. So we have to start to prioritize these things and put them into different dates. So we've been working really hard on saving our money to really try and do this kitchen remodel this year, and we actually think it's going to start in September. So we're going to give it a start date of September, and we think it's a 3-month project that's going to finish in November. So when I click those dates and go back to my project planning, you can see that that $30,000 got spread out over 3 years. But, I mean, excuse me, 3 months. But we're still $61,000 for the year that we can't afford to do that. So I have a feeling our next priority is going to be this office furnishings project where we really need to convert that spare bedroom into some office furniture. So we're going to try and maybe peg that for February of 2013. And we think we'll be able to finish all the buying of the furniture maybe in 2 months. So we'll say we'll be done by March of 2013. And if we go back to My Project Planning, notice that project is no longer visible. And that's because if you look in the upper right-hand corner, we're currently only showing the current year of 2012. We'll get back to that in one second. So I think our next priority is going to be doing that bedroom carpeting. So we're going to change that, not from 2012, but we're going to change that to maybe doing that project in July of 2013. And if I go back to my project planning, again, that project's gone. And maybe the last priority is our new patio area, unfortunately. So that might even have to move out 2 years to 2014. So we're going to try and get that done right before the summer. So let's say it's another 3-month project. We're going to start in March of 2014. Quick little swag. And we think we'll finish there by May of 2014. And if I go back to my project planning, now you can see that the only project that we're really planning on doing in 2012 is the kitchen remodel. But now I can look at the different projects for 2013. So if I click on 2013, you can see here it's going to show me my office furnishing and bedroom projects again spread out. If I go to 2014, that's going to now show me my new patio area. And now I can see all of my projects by choosing all my years, which is now going to show me that I'm going to do my kitchen remodel in 2012, my 2 office furnishing bedroom floor projects in 2013, and my new patio area in 2014. And below that, we even show you a bar chart that kind of shows you the visualization of how you might be able to spend your money over multiple years on your wish list projects. So I hope you enjoyed that on being able to project and cash flow plan your projects out, and stay tuned for more projects from HomeZada. Thanks, John.
