In this National Preparedness Month video, Beth Dodson from HomeZada walks viewers through practical, low‑stress ways to create a home inventory using the HomeZada platform. She outlines four main strategies: (1) a room‑by‑room, item‑by‑item walkthrough powered by HomeZada’s predictive setup of generic spaces and items; (2) focusing first on priority spaces such as outdoor areas, sheds, or home offices; (3) photographing and documenting high‑value or sentimental items like jewelry, artwork, books, or sports memorabilia; and (4) cataloguing tools and equipment for home‑based businesses to aid in insurance claims. Throughout, she emphasizes taking “baby steps,” using HomeZada’s reminders, and not feeling overwhelmed by trying to complete the inventory in one sitting. The video ends with an invitation for questions in the comments.

Hi everyone, Beth Dodson here with HomeZada. I hope you are having a fantastic day. I know I am. It is National Preparedness Month, and one of the things we wanted to talk to you about is how do you actually go about taking a home inventory. It sounds very simple, but we know that some of our customers get overwhelmed, so we want to walk you through a couple of different steps. The first thing that you can do is when you use HomeZada, you can give us the number of bedrooms, the number of bathrooms, and the type of home that you have, and we will predict the generic spaces and the generic items in those spaces. And if you walk through the process with HomeZada, we will walk you through taking a home inventory room by room by room, and it will basically go through the room and then the items in the room, then through the next room and through the items in the room, and so on and so forth. So we give you that process to help guide you through that. So that's one area, room by room, item by item. The second area or second option of taking a home inventory is to actually go through priority spaces. Maybe you have an outdoor area that's a priority for you and you think it's more important, so you want to start the outdoors then come in. Or maybe you have a shed and you want to do that and then come inside the house. Maybe you also operate an office of some sort out of your home. Maybe you work in the technology field and you have a lot of computer technology, or you're a photographer with a lot of photography equipment, and you want to prioritize that in a room. So you take photos of those items in that particular room and then go to the next particular room from there. The third option that we want to recommend for you is you may have valuable items that are monetarily valuable or emotionally valuable. So a good example of that is maybe you have jewelry and you want to take pictures of that jewelry, or you have high-value paintings or something to that effect and you want to take that first. Or you may have, um, specific books that may not be highly valuable in monetary components, but they are memorable to you and they are important to you. So you might want to track these books, or even sports memorabilia. You may want to track that first. Um, these are just areas of steps that you can take to take a home inventory to make it easier for you so you don't feel overwhelmed. The 4th area I wanted to talk to you about is a business. So we talked briefly about that earlier with maybe a photography business or you work out of your home, but maybe you operate a business out of your home, and that could be a technology business, that could be a photography business, that may even be a plumbing business or some other contracting business. And you want to take those tools and you want to make sure you're placing them in HomeZada. Because if by chance you lose any of those tools or they get stolen or what have you, you need to document that and actually file a claim. HomeZada can help you do that. So the 4 key areas that we suggest is: 1, walk through the room-by-room process that HomeZada can help you with. 2, walk through high-value spaces that you think are important. 3, walk through and take photographs and documents of the high-value items that you have, either monetarily or high in sentimental value. And then 4th, maybe you operate a business out of your home and you want to start there. But always remember, however you start, you can take baby steps to finish. You do not need to finish your entire home inventory in one sit-down opportunity using HomeZada. You can do it step by step. We will help remind you of what needs to be completed as well, and so you don't have to feel the pressure of actually doing it. Our system will help you do that. So I want to make sure you have these steps so that you don't feel overwhelmed, and then you can take action to go take a home inventory, especially during National Preparedness Month. If you have any questions, please let us know in the comments. We'll also put some more details below in the comments. Have a great day, and we look forward to serving you.
