In this episode of The Business of Executive Coaching host Ellie Scarf interviews Alex Field, a clinical psychotherapist, naturopath, and creator of the HEAL Method. Alex explains that a business owner’s growth is limited not by mindset alone but by biological capacity – the state of the nervous system. Drawing on Polyvagal Theory, she describes a "ladder" of physiological states: the ventral‑vagal "window of regulation" (grounded safety), the sympathetic "mobilized" state (fight‑or‑flight), the freeze (functional shutdown) and the dorsal‑vagal shutdown (depression). Chronic activation of the sympathetic or freeze drains physiological resources, narrows the window, and creates a ceiling for business performance, leading to burnout, gut and immune issues, and hormonal dysregulation (e.g., cortisol spikes, perimenopausal challenges). Alex argues that true capacity is biological; expanding the window through bottom‑up somatic regulation precedes any cognitive work. Once regulated, clients can surface core negative beliefs (e.g., "I'm unsafe," "I'm not good enough") and use Internal Family Systems/parts work to re‑parent those parts. She differentiates healthy resources (grounding, gentle movement, mindful pauses) from coping strategies that merely band‑aid (excessive exercise, alcohol). Practical tools include checking in with bodily cues, brief grounding practices, and the structured 12‑week HEAL Method (online education, weekly live calls, private community). The conversation highlights how coaches must upskill to recognize physiological blocks in themselves and their clients, tailor growth challenges to each person’s window width, and avoid pushing clients into white‑knuckling stress.
