Ep 1: Meet the The Soulpreneurs!
4 Aug 2021 · 22 min
Podcast episode introducing the Soulpreneurs community and its two co-founders, Emma and Imogen. They tell their origin stories (Emma: corporate sales manager turned coach; Imogen: performer turned coach), explain why they founded a soulful, alignment-first approach to entrepreneurship (rejecting hustle culture and one-size-fits-all blueprints), and outline plans to build a supportive program and community informed by human design and inner-work practices.
The Soulpinners are here to welcome the new way of business, to create a community of entrepreneurs who want to do business a different way. They do it the sole way. We are here to guide you along the soulful path and create your business desires.
Hey, Imogen.
Hey.
I'm so excited to be here.
Me too. I can't actually believe we're doing this. This is so. So, like, come full circle and something we've been speaking about for so long.
It's so crazy, isn't it? I think the last, like, year since we've kind of met and, like, become really good friends has just been such a whirlwind. Like, they talk about romance as being a whirlwind, but I really feel like our friendship has been one of those crazy love stories.
I know. It is mad, and it's all been so aligned and so perfect. I feel like the start of this, we should introduce the soulpreneurs and also the journey that we've been on. Take it back to the beginning and back where we first began and we came up with these ideas.
Yeah, absolutely. I think our story is definitely an interesting one. So, yeah, go ahead, tell everyone about the Soulpreneurs, where we met and.
Yeah, so we first met when I, Imogen, was a coach. I still am a coach, but I was really, really focused on helping women with their mindset, helping them with taking deep self belief, all of that kind of stuff. And then I met Emma through a friend of a friend, and she became a client. And then we worked together in my coaching program, hit it off straight away, and just really knew we had very, very similar values and goals about coaching. And I always remember one of your first sessions that I had, like, as you. As a client, you said, I've always been told I should do coaching. And I remember from that moment thinking, you're gonna be a coach. I just. After that, you obviously went and did your coaching. So tell us a little bit about that.
Yeah, so it's so interesting because a few years ago, I wanted to become a coach. Like, I really was so channeling into the idea of becoming a coach. I did lots of research. I was working in corporate, and I was kind of managing sales team. So a lot of that is coaching. You know, you're really getting. People who kind of come in day one, may have never been in sales before. This could be their first job. And it's really interesting, kind of seeing them go from A to B, and, you know, that is all around the training and the coaching. And for some reason, There was just something in the back of my head that was just saying to me, you're just not ready yet. And actually I remember when I first started coaching now kind of this time round, I was almost so annoyed that I hadn't done it back then. But actually I needed to go on that journey of self development of myself, you know, 100 going to therapy, stopping drinking, you know, investing in a coach, really understanding kind of what self care looks like. And actually now it's made me a better coach because I'm able to really understand that you may want to do something so badly at one time, but it's all about timing.
Yeah. Oh my God. Divine timing is everything.
And it's just, it's so easy to look back and go, I wish I did this and I wish I did that. And now that I've done so much work on myself, you know, I did so much work on myself while I was still in corporate, while I was working for other companies. And now that I've done that, I really, really do believe, as you said in that divine timing, that everything happens for a reason. And when we first met, I remember I always laugh about this for some reason, neither of us really use Facebook. I thought Facebook was the best place to message you. I do. And we look back now at the messages and when I first started out thinking I wanted to invest in a coach, I thought, I'll invest in a coach and then I want to move into being a coach. And looking back at the message I'd sent you, I wanted to go into the corporate world and coach because it felt quite. Not easy, but it felt like the most obvious route.
Safe. I think safe is always the word. People feel like with corporate, this 9 to 5 role, it's safety. It's that safety net that everybody, everyone feels like they have.
And that's the thing. So it felt very safe. And then when we kind of started working together, I realized that wasn't what I wanted to do. I'd kind of followed this path. And don't get me wrong, I had an amazing time. You know, I managed to make good money in what I was doing. I was able to hit a lot of the goals that I wanted to hit. You know, I had some big kind of financial goals, some big personal goals. I could have hit those not having worked in corporate. Now I know that. But actually when you finish school and you go to university and you graduate, the first thing is you get a job.
Yeah. 100. Everyone just follows that system and people think it's what they should do. Everyone is like, that's what I have to do. Because that's the norm and I have to follow that. And it's so liberating when you know it's not.
And I think that's the thing is I followed this path, as I said, thinking that that's what I should do. You know, my dad's had his own business. You know, I've got lots of friends and family who've kind of had their own businesses as well. But it always looked like you have kind of 20 years experience before you could kind of go and do your own thing. So when we started working together, it really started kind of opening up my eyes. And yes, I'd done a lot of kind of deep rooted work, as I said, I'd done a lot of therapy, I'd done a lot of kind of childhood stuff. But for me, what coaching really made me realize was moving forward. And I think that that's something I hadn't really looked at. I spent so much time blaming my past, digging into my past, which was great, but I needed that plan and I needed that understanding of what was possible for me not being defined by kind of where I'd come from. And I think that it was the first time I really, truly started to believe that just because I'd gone to school and then gone to university and got a job and bought the house and all of those kind of things, it didn't mean that my whole life had to truly be mapped out that way. And for me, investing in a coach was the really. It was such like. It was like tip of the iceberg with the work that I, that I knew I could do. And you know me and you had so many conversations about me quitting my job. I think I quit two jobs while I was working with you. I kept moving around left, right and center. And the reason I kept moving around was because nothing was serving me, nothing was fulfilling me.
And you're constantly going to keep playing that loop until you fix something deeper or you do something that's more aligned instead of following that same old pattern. And that's why it's not a bad thing that you went through all these different jobs. It's because you went to these things to experiment, right? Is this for me? Is this for me? And none of them were because you were never supposed to be working for someone else. Yeah.
And I think it's so clear now, now that I'm not, that that wasn't meant for me. And I remember when we kind of first started Working together. It was so clear to me, to you, to everyone else around me, that I wanted to do coaching, that when I told everyone I'm gonna be a coach before, people would bat eyelids and sort of say, oh, you're quitting another job or you're moving industry again. When I told people I wanted to become a coach, they were like, okay. And it just. Not that I needed that from other people, but it just showed me how aligned it was. And I think looking at your story, our backgrounds are so different. So different in. I really came from kind of the corporate world, you know, the nine till six, the kind of burnout culture. Your background is very different still, such an intense, crazy sort of industry. But I think for us that's probably why it works quite well. And I think I'd love to kind of talk a little bit about your story and how actually we, what we're doing aligns even though we're such different kind of backgrounds.
Yeah, 100%. So it's funny because I feel like so many people speak about the corporate world and I'm like, what is that? I have no idea what that is. I don't know what a 9 to 5 job is. But for me, before I started my coaching business, I trained when I was, you know, 16, 18 to be a professional dancer and I went to professional college. I did dancing, I did singing and acting. I have always been so, so driven and I've always been someone that I don't like to follow the crowd. I don't seem to like to follow ways that everyone does because I think I should. And I remember I went to, I applied for uni, I got into uni. I remember going. And I was at Liverpool uni and I was standing there in the halls and I was like, no, no, I don't want to do this. And I was the most insecure child, the most insecure teenager. Like, oh my God, my self esteem was in the floor. I. But something just told me like, no, follow your passion. So I followed my passion for dancing, for performing. I live for that. And then I worked professionally on cruise ships. So for me that was a taster of you really can do what you love and get paid to do it. And I'd done that for six years and that was my absolute dream. I'd like ticked that off my, the biggest goal in my life. But I really was so obsessed with I can work what hours I want. Like obviously the show, you can't even call that work. I remembered we'd go to the dressing room and one of my friends would always be like, oh, we've got work later. And I'd always be like, you can't call that work. Like, that is not work. We're performing a show. But my mindset was always like, I want to continue this. I want to carry on setting my own rules, having my own time. I know that I can earn money by doing a passion, not doing a job, because I need a job. So I've always kind of had that mindset. And then mindset was something that I'd always felt like I'd been gifted with, but also because of the journeys I've had. I've had a lot of journeys with mindset, through having an eating disorder, through having really, really low self esteem, like in the floor, that it's something that I've always wanted to work on, I've always wanted to do. I knew I wanted to run my own business. I just didn't know what it was in. I tried a few different things. I set up a few different stores online, I'm not even gonna say the names of because they're still not searchable. So, you know, I tried a few things and then I found coaching. It literally appeared on my phone. And my whole life I've been called everyone's agony on. I'm the, I'm the person that people go to for advice. And I was like, this is me. Like, oh my God. And then, yeah, I used the same drive and determination that I did in dancing to create my business. And where we really align now and where this is so pivotal for where we're starting the Soulpinners is that through my journey of business and your journey of being in the corporate and now learning to create your own company and your own business, we are now really at this time in our self development journey. Look, self development goes hand in hand with business. It really, really does. And we're both at this stage in our journey where we're doing so much of the inner work. We're really coming into our own, getting real alignment for who we are that we're now seeing. There's a different way to do business. And I have tried all the blueprints, all the frameworks, someone else's strategy. I've tried all of them. I've done all the things, I've done all the do's. But now the more I stick to something that is my way and right, do I really want to do this? Do I want to do that for my business? Or am I doing it because someone else's and all of those inner questions that you ask. And that is kind of the birth of the soulpreneurs that we've had. And it was so incredible how this came about, because I remember so clearly being on a dog walk and this idea coming into my head, and it was when you had just started thinking about being a coach. You'd already signed up to get your whole coaching accreditation. I think you'd even done a few weeks. And I remember being on a dog walk and thinking, wow, me and Emma get on. We just click. She has all this business corporate experience. I have all this experience of being in mindset, being passionate, being very. So I'm very spiritual. If we merge the two together, oh, my God. And it's like we said that idea to each other, and it's like now we're at the point where we just couldn't even imagine that idea not being there. We couldn't even imagine life without it. And we really, really believe in this spiritual way of doing business because it's that alignment for you. You don't do business, so you have to hustle and you have to grind and you have to. You get no hours to do anything. You do business for the freedom. And we are here to create that community, to show people that you can do it that way, you can do it the soul way, and all of that. So, yeah, that's the birth of the soulpreneurs. So do you want to tell us a little bit more about what we're going to do with the soulpreneurs? A little bit more about it?
Sure. I mean, I just love the way you talk about both of our experiences really coming together. And I think that we're both on these journeys of, as you said, like self discovery, self development, building our own businesses. We both kind of have our own businesses separately. And I think the beauty of coming together is not because you have to have the support from other people or you have to learn from other people, but I think it's having. You know, when you're running a business yourself, you can sit at your desk for literally 12 hours a day when you're kind of starting thinking you should be doing this way, thinking you should be doing that way. You also don't really have the people to kind of bounce ideas off or just say, hey, listen, instead of me mulling this over for seven hours, I just want to ask what you think, and just give me your opinion in five minutes. And it's really that beauty that we're trying to kind of build this collective of like minded, kind of soul driven entrepreneurs who want to be part of a community where they can kind of learn that extra knowledge and basically deeper learning into who they are individually. As you said before, the one size fits all approach just doesn't work. It doesn't work for me, it doesn't work for you. And often we're really told that you kind of have to follow what's worked for other people. And don't get me wrong, there are some amazing people out there who have these blueprints that do work. And I think looking at those, but being able to put your own spin on it and your own soul into it, that's really kind of where the difference comes in. And I think we're kind of entering an era where, as I said, it's really about doing it your own way. Yeah, it's about, you know, driving with your soul, your mission, your purpose. And with the soulpreneurs, we're going to create the community that really supports those kind of pillars and encourages, you know, one another to find their own structure, but share their gifts in the way that feels right for them, not how they think they should be doing it. Like we've been programmed since we were born, two things.
And I think I want to give credit here to the whole experience we've had with human design. So this is kind of how we had. It was so weird because we had this idea to do this business together, to do this stuff that we want to do with this community, how we're going to help other like minded entrepreneurs who want to do it the sole way. And then I personally have been venturing down human design and I am now doing human design readings. I'm a human design coach. And when we discovered what that really was and went into that in depth and we realized and saw from that that when we're following the shoulds of life, that's when we're following the conditioning. You know, the get married at this time, have this many kids, go to this university, get this job, or even if it's in your own business, oh well, you should be doing this, you should be doing this on social media, all of those should. And what human design teaches us is that there really is. You might not need strategy, you might not need a certain way of marketing. You know, it's not that we all do the same thing. And that is what our whole ethos in the soulpreneurs really, really want to celebrate. So we want to bring together the community of people that are empowered to be on this soul journey, put that into their business and think, right, how do I want to do my business? I'm going to go into this community, so I know I'm in that safety, I'm in that collective, and I'm going to find out my way. You, every single person, have your own specific way to do something. It's not that there is this. I know we've said this, but this one size fits all. But there is a journey on you finding out what that way is. Okay? So I know there is my way. Am I just going to know what it is, or am I going to find it out? And it's about us having this community where we support everyone going through what stage of this they're at. They might be at the beginning, like, oh, my God, I need to find my soul way. But I'm at the beginning, and there might be someone who's followed it for months, and they're there to support, to say, you know, it's liberation, it's a permission slip to just do it your way. So that's really where all of this has come from. And I want to, because I'm obsessed with human design, but also, just like, that's where we've got this whole ethos from. And it's so, so empowering and so liberating.
I think what's really interesting is that kind of permission slip, because both myself and yourself, we've done so much work. But at one point, we were at the start of our journey. You know, everyone starts somewhere, and I think it's really easy. You know, I did this at the beginning of my kind of personal development, growth, whatever you kind of want to call it. I looked at other people and I thought, they're so aware and conscious of what's going on, and they're so, so living in their purpose and their design, and they're exactly where they need to be. And I thought I would never get there. Like, I really, really thought that I'm constantly going to be in jobs that I hate. And, you know, one of the first things that we've spoken about kind of launching is really, you know, about finding yourself, you know, finding your sole purpose and really being able to navigate it. So that's something that we're sort of working on at the moment, which is really exciting, because, as I said, we were both in that position once. And I think having something like a program that really is a series of kind of different, you know, engagements, different videos, different kind of collective groups is so powerful when you're so early on in your journey or maybe having not even started that journey, but you've kind of got that fire that thinks there's more out there, but where the hell do I begin?
Yeah. And that's the thing that this program and this series that we're going to create is going to meet you where you're at. It's not that you have to be a certain place, it's that it's going to meet you where you're at. Because we're going to have from the before a even came to all the way up to the end of running a business, scaling business, all of those bigger things we're going to have and create this whole platform. But it's always going to be that same journey of it being so aligned to you that you do not spend a day feeling like you're working. You don't spend a day feeling like you're hustling or grinding, that it's all done for you in this way that is this collective way. And I'm so, so excited for the launch of that first series program to kind of, yeah, bring people into this world. And like you say, we know where it's what it's like to be at that beginning and just even just have that gut feeling like I want to do something and I am not being funny, but right now is the most perfect time for you to be venturing on this and listening to that gut response to wow, I want to run my own business. And even if you have no idea what it's going to be about, that honestly doesn't matter. That will come. You will find what your gift is, what you're here to share, you will find that. But the number one thing is to just say yes to that response. Say yes to that. I really like the idea of it. I'm just going to go, I'm just going to start and see what happens. And that is what we are here to celebrate, to encourage and to empower with all of you soul led entrepreneurs.
I'm so excited for this journey and that we're finally able to share it. I feel like it's been something that we've wanted to share for such a long time now and we're so excited to kind of have you all as part of this journey as we grow the collective. For now, you can kind of join us, you know, via our Instagram, listen to our podcast, as I said, while we're kind of building this all out. And we will be launching our first kind of series very, very soon. So we'll keep you all posted on that. But I am so excited to be on this journey with the Imogen.
Me too. I feel like the whole story of how it just came about has been so, so amazing, so aligned. I know we're gonna look back at this and be like, oh, my God. The universe was with us, and it showed how aligned we were. That timing was so perfect because we'd both done that separate work, and we both still run our own businesses, which I think is so key as well, because we're in it as well. We're not only doing the soulpreneurs, but we're doing our own business, and we're following everything that lights us up, and that's why it's so great, and it's so aligned, And I'm so excited for this journey of the soulpreneurs.
Where business meets soul and journey meets alignment.
