19 Oct 2023 · 16 min
This solo episode of the Career Chronicles Podcast (host: Emma Naylor‑Weston, the "no BS Career Coach") focuses on confidence and mindset as the primary barriers to career advancement, especially for women who make excuses about why success is for others, not them. Emma shares personal stories of imposter syndrome and early struggles, challenges listeners to stop rationalizing others' success, and provides concrete actions: list your excuses and countermeasures, use free resources, and build confidence through deliberate practice. She offers a free 12-page "Career Confidence Guide for Six Figures and Beyond" (assessment, SMART goals, journaling prompts, morning routine steps, and a 28‑day confidence plan) and closes with calls-to-action (download, subscribe, follow Instagram).

Welcome back to this week's podcast. I'm so excited to talk about this topic. It's been something that I've been discussing in my DMs. I been having multiple conversations with my one to one clients and it's all about the confidence that we have within ourselves. So many women that I speak to lack that confidence in their careers. They lack this confidence and this element that what they want is not available to them, that what they want is so out of their reach that they're so unqualified. The conversation that I'm hearing a lot is people and women finding reasons why success is within someone else's reach, but not theirs. They keep saying it's possible for her, but it's not possible for themselves. They'll constantly make excuses of this person Married into wealth. They were born with money. They entered the industry before it really soared. They received an opportunity that no one else did. Or they have so much confidence, no wonder they get all the opportunities. They're prettier than me, they're skinnier than me, they're better on camera, they've got better contacts. So many people I speak to will find reasons why it's possible for her and not for them, but then won't do the work to get to that next level. One of the biggest things I heard really early on in my journey was that you cannot be annoyed at the results you didn't get from the work you didn't do. And that has stood with me and been ingrained in my head of I cannot complain about the results that aren't happening because I haven't done the work. There are so many excuses around why she can do it and you can't. And the only difference between the woman running the six figure business, the woman getting the promotion, the woman putting herself forward for all of those opportunities is because she is willing to do the work. She's willing to be uncomfortable, she's willing to persevere even when surrendering and giving up seems like the best option. She's confident she's willing to step into that next level of confidence and do the work to get the results that she desires in this life of hers, regardless of the excuses, I see you, I hear you making them, but it is time to end this cycle of why it's possible for her and it's not possible for you. And I promise you, if it's possible for her, if it's possible for me, it's also possible for you too. The woman that you see, including myself, has endured the discomfort. Even if it's not been posted on social media. The women who are succeeding have had those levels of what is going on. They face those days where nothing seemed to work. But she never posted about it. She's been working behind the scenes for years and years and years on herself, on her confidence, on her business, long before she shared any of that journey online. And as I said before, the only difference between her and you is she's willing to put in the work to get the results that she so badly fucking wants because she knows that she is worthy of them now. If I think about my journey, when I first started, I did not believe that I would ever be able to create anything that I've created. When I stepped out of corporate into the world of coaching, I made a million excuses about why every other coach in the world was going to be successful apart from me. I was struggling with imposter syndrome, lack of confidence, lack of clarity. I would constantly make excuses about why it would never work. And you know what? For a while it didn't. I was sat in the energy of poor me, poor me, this is not going to work. And you know what? I didn't get the results I wanted because I wasn't willing to put that work in. But when I changed my mindset and I stepped into that level of work and I stopped making the goddamn excuses, that's when things really started to shift. Was it easy? No, it wasn't. I think about the first time I did an Instagram live, and I remember I was so nervous, I could literally feel the sweat running down my back and in my palms. I went bright red. My chest was like on fire. But I fucking did it. And I showed up, even though it was uncomfortable, because I knew that if I wanted to get to that next level in my career, I had to do the things that other people weren't willing to do. I had to do the things that I'd seen other people with success doing. I had to do that. I had to step into that next level of confidence. I was done with the excuses about why it was possible for her and not possible for me. I stepped away from. She has it easy. This is better. She married rich, she has all of the clients. Because of X, she got a good opportunity. She got invited to go on this podcast and that generated loads of money for her business. She joined a small business earlier and therefore that's why she's a director at age 30. Whatever your goals are and whatever it is that you're looking for, by pulling down another woman and saying why it's possible for her and not possible for you, that's going to get you fucking nowhere. You will stay in the same place if you continue to pinpoint and pick what, why it's not possible for you. And I really want to let you into something that you already know. It is possible for you if you are willing to do the damn work. But if you're not and you're willing to sit on the sidelines and keep pointing the finger about why it's possible for everyone else and not you, Let me, let me let you into a little secret. That's exactly what's going to happen. It's not going to be possible for you. It's going to be possible for all the other people around you who are willing to do that work. And I really want you to sit with that and think about all of the times that you've made excuses about why it's not going to work for you. I want you to sit down and really list them and actually write them out. And now on the other side of the paper, I want you to write down the reasons and the things you can do to overcome that. If it's lack of clarity, fine. Work with someone. Get some clarity on that. There are so many free resources online of figuring out how to get clarity in your next career steps. If you're lacking confidence. There are an abundance of YouTube videos and podcasts all about confidence and how to get that confidence. If it's that you're not good at tech again, there are so many videos on YouTube of how to set up a business, how to write a kick ass CV, how to write an incredible cover letter using ChatGPT. We live in a world now where we have access to so many free resources and the biggest block of not getting to that next level is us. It's us not willing to do the work on ourselves to get to that next level. It's us lacking that confidence that we know it's possible. Even though there are so many free resources out there to help us get to that next level. Confidence is one of the biggest, biggest blocks that I see with people I speak to so many women day in and day out who are so be beyond talented. They are incredible in their field. They've got the most incredible qualifications, they've got the most incredible experience. If you looked at their CV on paper, they would hit every single box for someone who's making six or seven figures in a company. But to get to that next level in your career, it really requires this unwavering confidence that so many women and men lack. They don't have the confidence to elevate their career to the next level so they stay in the same place. Whether you're a business owner, whether you're climbing the corporate ladder, this is all relevant. You can have the best product on the market, but if you are not confident in yourself to sell it, how is it going to get out? You can have the best CV in the world, but if you can't present and sell yourself in a way with that confidence at the core in an interview, how are you going to get there? So I really invite you to think about what excuses you have been making about why you're not getting to the next level in your career. And I invite you to challenge some of those in a way that feels uncomfortable as fuck. I want you to challenge where those thoughts and where that belief system comes from. And I really want you to dig deep in how you're going to rewire and reframe those. But the first step is understanding where the fuck those come from. Where does that lack of confidence come from? Where does that narrative you've told yourself, where does that come from? Where does that exist? And I really want you to challenge yourself in a way that you've never challenged yourself before. Because remember, if we want to get to new places, we have to do things that we've never done before. I think they say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. And I can put my hand up and say, I used to do that, I would do the same things, I would have the same behaviors, I would have the same patterns, I wouldn't do the work on myself and somehow I would expect different results. It wasn't until I started doing the goddamn work on myself and I stepped into this next level of confidence, things started to change and yeah, it's really scary doing a live on Instagram. It's really scary applying for a job and getting an interview that you feel so under qualified for. It's really scary being vulnerable. But that's all about that next level and leveling up, especially in your career, if you want to get to that next level, that six figure, that new promotion, that new business, those big months in your business, you have to be willing to be uncomfortable, but you have to have the confidence to back it up. Because if not, you can have papers and papers and papers of how great you are. But if you don't have the mindset and the belief system and the habits and the strategy and the clarity and the confidence to go and execute that, none of that is going to happen. And every single person I speak to has more than the capability to create something incredible in their career. And the only difference between the people who are doing it and the people who aren't doing it is they have the confidence to go and do it. I speak to so many men and women who are far more qualified on paper than a lot of the people out there doing the things that they want to do. But you know, the difference is they have the confidence to show up in the room, to go and ask for those opportunities, to be in front of the right people, to do the things that are uncomfortable, to do the cold messages, to get rejected and rejected and rejected, to have the failed businesses, to have the nose from potential clients. But they keep going and they keep pushing. They have that inner, that core confidence to go and do it. And if that's not you, that's okay. The great thing about confidence is you can build it. It's not, you know, a lot of people are born very, very confident. A lot of people aren't. But the great thing about confidence is that you can change it. You can build on that confidence and you can take the skills and the knowledge you have, combine it with that confidence and you have an incredible human who can go and do whatever they want if they put their mind to it. Now, I wanted to share something with you that I have also created for you as a free download. It is the career confidence guide for six figures and beyond. So it's 12 pages of incredible tools that I actually use in real time with my one to one coaching clients. And we've got the six figure assessment, we've got the smart goals for, for six figure goal setting. We've got the reframe, we've got, we've got the seven days of journaling building bold confidence for six figures and beyond. And then we've got six steps to building a six figure morning routine. And then as a bonus, we've got 28 days to a six figure confident mindset which is simple but bold action to take over the next 28 days to build your confidence and move away from that bullshit that is keeping you where you are. I'll put that in the show notes so so you can have a download of that. I would absolutely love to hear what you think about that. It is something that, as I said, I use with my clients all the time. It's something that has a lot of simple steps, but super, super powerful. Now I really want to finish this episode just to remind you that you cannot be annoyed at the results you didn't get from the work you didn't do. But if it's possible for the people that inspire you, then it is possible for you to get to work, drop the bullshit excuses and start reaping the rewards of the career that you so desperately want that you know is in reach. Get to work, drop those excuses and I promise you everything in your world is about to change. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week and I will see you on next week's episode.
