Ep 2: Investing in YOU!
27 Oct 2021 · 20 min
This single-host podcast episode (Ep 2: Investing in YOU!) features Emma Naylor-Weston speaking directly to ambitious women about why and how to invest in themselves. She outlines common barriers—fear of the unknown, perceived unaffordability, not knowing what to learn, and lack of time—and reframes small acts (listening to podcasts, journaling, peer support) as valid investments. Drawing on her own path (extensive free learning, 12 weeks of therapy that she found transformative, multiple coaches, and weekly peer calls), Emma lists benefits such as broader perspective, increased self-confidence, changed beliefs, and better ability to reach goals. The episode ends with journal prompts and a concrete action step: choose a goal, find free resources, schedule research time, and start now rather than waiting for the new year.

To support them in turning their dreams into reality, to help them and guide them to turn their magic back on, step into their purpose and live their most authentic life. Welcome back to the youe can have it all podcast. I'm so excited for this week's episode. It's all about investing in yourself. Now, investing in yourself can seem like such an intimidating prospect. Essentially it can feel super time consuming, really high risk, and essentially it brings up so much for us around worthiness. Because when we're looking to invest in ourselves, we have to be at the stage where we feel like we need that extra support. However, we can often be at that stage where we don't feel worthy. There are often so many good reasons or excuses, excuses about why we won't invest in ourselves. Whether it's time, money, energy, the fact that we feel our goals are so unachievable that we'll never be able to get there. So it's really, really important to start thinking about investing in yourself. If it's something you haven't done, this podcast is for you and it's absolutely going to help you get to that next level. So when it comes to my journey of investing in myself, I absolutely was so adamant that I didn't need external help that I knew exactly what I wanted to do. And to be honest, my goals were so unachievable that I was never really going to get there. When we talk about investing in ourselves, the way that it looked for me was in lots of different ways. There was time investment where I would go online and listen to free podcasts and webinars and read, you know, free articles online. That's also investing in yourself because you're investing time and energy. There's the other investing, which is the financial investment. And this usually comes after you've spent some time investing time and energy into the free resources available. So I really want to go through the benefits of investing in yourself and really, really understanding why it's so important that us as multi dimensional human beings, that we invest in ourselves. So just to kind of break it down, when we talk about investing in ourselves, it's learning new things, taking intelligent risks, stepping out of our comfort zone in terms of time and money and energy, exploring other opportunities to improve our life, setting bigger goals, having a coach to help us get there, hiring a therapist to Help us work through some of the past, work through some of the trauma, and really, really understanding that making a personal investment is a priority. So however much you invest in yourself essentially is going to determine your experience and, and it's really, really going to assist you in achieving those goals in your life. On the flip side, it can also have massive, massive beneficial effects such as mental health, emotional health, career prospects, financial goals that we set, and whatever you really, really want to achieve in life. So if we kind of start from the beginning around why people don't invest in themselves, and the few main reasons that I've seen as a coach is it's safer to stay where you are. The unknown can be so scary and so daunting that often a lot of people just stay exactly where they are. Because to be honest, even if it's uncomfortable, at least you know what that uncomfortable feels like. So as they say, a lot of people just stay comfortable being uncomfortable. And when we really, really think about it, we don't want to stay where we are if it's uncomfortable you, even if it's what we know, they believe that they cannot afford it. A lot of people think that investing in yourselves means that you need to drop tens of thousands of pounds. And just as I said before, there's so many free resources online, on YouTube, podcasts, whatever it is, there's so many free resources. Another thing that really, really stops people is they don't know what they want to learn, so they never stop start. And that's the self sabotaging behavior, the excuses that we make to say, well, I don't know what I want to do, so I'm not going to start. And the final one for me is time. A lot of people say, oh well, I don't have the time to invest. You know, I don't have a spare hour a week for me, even 20 minutes. Listening to a podcast is investing yourself. So I really, really want to shift your mindset around investing in yourself. So let's first of all start about the sort of top reasons that you should be investing in yourself. So first of all, it's really going to broaden your perspective. It's really gonna allow you to see things in a different way and give meaning to kind of new experiences. So when you learn, you develop new awarenesses, you develop new ways of thinking and new ways of understanding. In turn, this is going to allow you to deal with people, whether it be in the office, whether it be family, in different ways, when challenges arise in life, in whatever sectors you'll Be able to overcome those challenges so much faster and be able to identify things that are going wrong as well as identifying the solutions a lot quicker. So by investing in ourselves, we really start understanding our triggers, we really start understanding where we're coming from. The second big one for me is the increase in self confidence. So when you know something, you have a different level of confidence. You know, higher levels of confidence are gonna are gonna start pouring out, you're gonna start giving off that energy. You are going to have rebuilt and you're gonna have start started to understand why you think about things in a certain way. You're going to be able to show up in a different way and therefore it's going to lead to that higher level of self confidence. This is actually my favorite one and for me this was where the game really, really changed in my journey. You will change your beliefs because our beliefs are based on what we know or accept as true. And as you expand your awareness and your knowledge and your understanding and you start doing the deep rooted work on yourself, you will start to question things that you believe are true because you are having a different perspective on it. It's going to allow you to create different beliefs and therefore you're going to be able to achieve different goals. Those self sabotaging behaviors will stop those limiting beliefs. We're going to break those down and we're going to increase the empowered beliefs that are going to enable us to get to where we want to. The fourth one, which again, you know, all of these are such big things in my journey we're going to put ourselves in a better position to get what we want. You know, we're going to understand how to take risks, how to set better goals, how to know when things aren't working, how to accept defeat and say actually what have I learned from this? And we'll also start understanding how we can keep pushing forward, if we should keep pushing forward. A lot of us now, and including myself, I would go into something saying I know this is not going to work. And as soon as I hit the first hurdle I would quit because it validated my belief of this is not possible for me, this is not allowing me to get where I want to get to. Because as I said before and as I told you, this is not available for me. So it's really, really important. Once we have that investment in ourselves and once we started doing the work on ourselves, we really, really start to understand actually yes, things are going to get hard and yes, we're going to be, you know, challenged but that's okay. And I want to keep going and I want to keep pushing. And that's the difference between someone who is invested in themselves and understands, understands that things get difficult and understands that things get hard. And my last reason for investing in yourself, massive, massive reason, is you are your best investment. We spend so much time building other people's businesses, you know, holding each other up, telling our friends and family how amazing they are, telling each other how wonderful they are. And actually, I ask you this. When was the last time you sat back and really, really thought all of those fabulous and wonderful things that you say to your friends? When was the last time you actually thought that about yourself? And I invite you to question why you, as I said, as a multi dimensional human being, you have not invested in your biggest asset, which is yourself. So when we think about investing, I really, really want you to change your mindset around what investing means. What does investing in yourself mean? And I invite you to use these as journal prompts because this is what really, really helped me. One, what am I doing to invest in myself? Two, what does investing in myself actually mean? And three, what has stopped me in the past from investing in myself? And invite you to think about those questions, to really deep dive into what that truly, truly means for you. Now, when I first invested in myself, I came from a place of lack. I came from a place of scarcity. Around money, around my worthiness, everything you can imagine. I was there. I did every single free webinar from every single coach. I listened to hundreds of hours of free podcasts. I was doing every single free class I could find online. It got to a point where I knew I needed more. I knew that I needed to take that next level. And that's when I invested in a therapist. Now, obviously, I'm not a therapist. I'm a coach, which is very, very different. But for the purposes of this podcast, that was my first real investment into myself. And at the time when my therapist told me how much he was charging, I thought, absolutely not. How can you be charging me that many, that much an hour? What are you going to do? Change my life? And he did. He absolutely did change my life. However, when I first went into that session, I was held back. I was reserved. I felt scared. I felt almost angry that I was in this position that I couldn't fix myself. However, I worked with him for 12 weeks, and at the end of those 12 weeks, I was a different human being. Not because he had some magic wand where he made everything better, but he allowed Me the safe, the safe space to be vulnerable. He provided me with the tools and the resources that I needed to get to that next level. I used to absolutely love his motto, and I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was something along the lines of, you shouldn't have to spend your life in a therapy chair or whatever. It was something around that. And for me, that resonated with me so much. You know, yes, we are always a work in progress, and yes, we are constantly growing. However, there's different stages of investment, there's different stages of growth. Sometimes you'll need more support than others. Sometimes you won't feel like you need to have a coach or outside support. Listening to your podcast is enough. Doing your morning routine or journaling is enough. However, that opened a massive, massive floodgate for me, realizing I loved external support and I loved external help. And as a lot of you may or may not know, I'm in AA as well, which is essentially free support groups, which I absolutely love. Yes, I don't pay for it essentially, but I pay for it in my time and energy. I pay for it by doing service and helping other alcoholics and showing up and doing tea service and doing whatever I need to do for that, for that community. So I see that as investing in, in myself. I've had three coaches in the last year and they've all allowed me to do different things. And as a coach, I will always have a coach. I will always continue to invest in myself. Not because I'm broken, not because I need someone else to fix me, but because I know that having that outside perspective, that outside support, and quite frankly, that support, that's all about me. And when we're investing in ourselves or investing in a coach, or investing in anyone who's supporting us, it's all about you. And I've had so many clients say to me, I have a great support network, I have great friends, I have great family, which is amazing. Having a great support network like that is life changing. However, when we're talking to friends, it's a two way conversation. The energy is me, you, me, you. With a coach or with a therapist. That's not how it is. When you're with a coach or a therapist or a PT or a mentor, the hour session is all about you. It's about your goals and your vision. For example, even if you're listening to a podcast or attending a free webinar, it's not about what anyone else thinks. It's not about you asking, did the instructor get Anything or did the coach get anything out of the session? What their goals are or what their visions are? It's all about what you get from it. And that's where investing in ourselves is not selfish, it's important. It's a necessity that we invest in ourselves. And it's so important that we try and change this mindset shift and say investing in myself is a luxury. I understand that not everyone can afford a coach or a therapist or a PT per hour. Absolutely. I've been in that position, as I said before, where all I could really get my hands on in terms of financial kind of things was getting free webinars and free podcasts. I wasn't in the mindset to be investing in myself. I didn't feel worthy of investing in myself and. And quite frankly, I didn't really have the income to spend on it. Now my mindset is completely different. If I had known the results I would have got, I would have invested in a coach and a therapist much earlier on in my journey. However, my journey was getting to that point where I felt like I'd exhausted everything and then I needed to make that next step. So this podcast is not saying, go and pay a therapist, go pay a coach, go pay a pt. This podcast is really for me to invite you to start thinking about how you can invest in yourself. How does that look for you? How does that show up in your day to day life? And for me today, the way that I have invested in myself and that I am going to invest in myself is I have a support network of four girls from a previous coaching course. We speak once a week for an hour and it lights me up and it's amazing. There is no financial investment in that. It's a time and energy exchange and investment. So for me, that is one big thing that I'm going to do today. The second thing is I have a podcast that I really, really want to listen to. It's a podcast that comes out every week and it's someone who's been a coach. I did one of her courses and her podcast comes out every week. And I take my dog on a walk. I listen to that podcast. And the final thing that I'm going to do in terms of investing in myself, I'm going to give myself the time like I do every evening, to sit down and journal. I journal about what's gone on in the day and what's happened. Now there are three free things that I'm going to do today to invest in myself. I also tomorrow have my business coach that I pay for. It's a business coach who is helping me get me, help me get my business to where I want it to be. Now, for many of you, that's not something that you're looking at. So please, please, please I invite you to start thinking about what is the one thing that you can do today. The final thing I'm going to leave you with is an action step. Because I love getting to the end of a podcast and having an actionable, tangible step to take. So I want you, and I invite you to identify a goal that you want to achieve that you are determined to accomplish. I then want you to search free resources online that are going to help you get to that goal faster. For example, if you are looking for financial freedom or having multiple income goals, the first thing that came to me was money. I, I was doing my accounts this morning. That is where my head is at. So start searching for resources that are going to improve your financial situation. Start scheduling a time in your diary that it's going to allow you to research how to invest, take a deep dive, download a spreadsheet that's going to allow you to look at your income and your outgoings and how long it's going to take you to pay off your credit cards. I really, really invite you to start doing the work. You you know, as I say, I keep going on about this. I think we have about 66 days left of 2021. Do not be that person that waits until 2022 to start your goals. Set yourself up now. Start doing the work. And the the you on 1st of January 2022 is going to thank you for all of the work that you've put in this year. I really hope that you enjoyed the podcast this week. I hope some of it resonated with you. I hope I would love to hear any feedback or anything that you think about the podcast. I'm wishing you all a fabulous rest of your week and please please listen to those action steps, see the changes and steps that you can make. And as I said that you on New Year's Eve is going to look back and be so thankful that you invested in yourself. Thanks for listening to this week's podcast podcast. We really hope you enjoyed it. If you did, please head over and leave us a review. Remember to subscribe so you're the first to know about new episodes.
