a week in my life in san francisco (startups, community, routines and friends)

Eunice Lai documents a week in San Francisco juggling an 80-hour work week, gym sessions, and a friend group that does dim sum dinners together. She walks at 3 pm, plays Overwatch at night, and obsesses over Trader Joe's baladi bread while thinking through how structure keeps her sane.

Quick intermission. I am eating some dragon fruit. Happy food dance. Wait, it kind of looks really sloppy. No, I'm okay, I'm okay. I'll go get my own. Super simple turkey cottage cheese pesto sandwich. I wish I had like arugula for this, but this works. Oh my gosh. Every day around 3, I like to go on a walk when it's still sunny out. No sun today, but I'm gonna go grab coffee because stand-up ran a bit longer and I got a bit lazy to make my own latte. I'm gonna be making fried rice with sambal, which is like a Malaysian paste. We usually use it in nasi lemak, but I don't have anchovies, peanuts. I don't have all that. I love this paste because it's like the perfect blend of spice and shrimpiness. I'm not a big seafood fan, but like something about this— There was a point in time where I had no separation of work and life, so I would just come back to my room and I would just keep working, but I realized that's just— that's not good, you know. All work, no play makes Jack a dull man, and, you know, it makes me a dull girl, I guess. So I always— usually I try not to bring my laptop back into my room, but I'm trying. I'm editing videos right now, but usually after work, if I've gotten most of the stuff that I want to do done, I really try to spend the— well, technically I only have 2 hours after work, but I will spend the 2 hours doing something that relaxes me, whether that is watching Netflix or playing video games. I recently got a PS5, so I've been really enjoying playing Overwatch on it. So I— yeah, this is how I wind down at night when I am not doing anything late at night. Alexa, turn off lights. Taking a step out of the office today to go to Parable's launch part— not launch party, housewarming party. We love Anne, she's so cute. And if you ever, ever watch this, you're the GOATs. That's it. Hello, it's Wednesday morning. After that event, I was so tired, so I didn't really want to pull my camera out, but it was like— it's like your typical event. There's some foods, people are just mingling. Most of the people there were working in consumer. I'm just like low social battery. Like, I have been doing a lot on the weekends. I've been just interacting with a lot of people. I think going into postgrad life, one of my biggest fears was like, oh no, like my week-to-week life is gonna be so monotonous and there's like no variability. That is so not true. I like— now I don't want people's— I don't want variability. I just want a routine. I haven't had my morning yogurt bowl in so long because I've just been eating out way too much. I'm gonna camp out in my room and eat this in peace, and I'm gonna go back downstairs and get some work done. It is 5:30 now. I am walking to the gym, and I'm so excited because this ride is Diplo themed, and I love his music. What's that one song? On My Mind. Oh my God, that's like my get ready like house or a song. So I'm really excited to see that. I don't know, guys, I'm like serious, like if you love EDM music, you just love spinning. Like even if you hate exercising, spinning is so much fun because you get to like move to the beat and you like feel it in your soul. I don't know, like I don't know, I'm becoming— this is the Bay Area-fication of me. I am just another one of your typical Asian in tech that loves EDM. But you know what? You know what? That's okay. Join me right here. Back, back. I can't let you go, baby. I just want to tell you that. No, no, no, no, no. Oh dear. All of my friends say, girl, you better take care, cuz that man is trouble. It best we I just finished the movie. What the fuck did I just watch? I don't know, that was like lowkey upsetting. I really— I didn't enjoy that. I really didn't enjoy that. I kind of wish I didn't watch that actually. It was like one of the weirdest movies I've ever watched. It's like about AI, but not really. I— it's like 1 in the morning. I'm upset. I'm stepping out of the office for a little bit. My friends and I are trying to host this biweekly dinner club where we try out a new restaurant every single time. Today we're doing dim sum because we wanted to have the communal spirit, and yeah. I almost died on the way here, so I feel a little bit rattled. Like, I went into this giant, giant tunnel that I've never been into, and cars were going so freaking fast. I got really scared. Anyways, the restaurant's here, so— So, Cynthia, so I'm like a— The tradition, a shot at the end of each mutual's dinner. Oh my god. Oh, that's a good idea, actually. Cheers! Cheers! Here's to meeting strangers. Here's to Twitter. Today I'm going to a cafe because I'm filming an intro for this collab video that I'm doing. So I made this coffee directory website that helps you find places to work from home, or work out of home actually, and I'm just gonna go to a cafe to film the intro for that. To be honest, it's quite hard balancing content with, um, having a full-time job, especially one that's like 80-hour work week. Am I doing the math right? But I'm lucky that I'm able to wake up in the morning so I can squeeze in some time in the morning. But it does require so much discipline. I, I don't know, I might burn out one day, but as of right now I have the energy to do all this, so Fullscreen toast, so you can like share the memory. To find mutuals or find other people who are also interested in something. So this conversation is I wanted to eat a lighter breakfast. I cut up these yellow dragon fruit that I got at Trader Joe's. They put it on the outside, so it's like front and center. I was just really curious to try it, so— oh my god, it's so sweet. Mmm, holy shit, this is like better than normal dragon fruit. Lately I've been really obsessed with these baladi Egyptian sourdough pocket breads from Trader Joe's. It's 180 calories but it has 7 grams of protein, so it does make a really good carb source. Now all you have to do is air fry it for 6 minutes. I'm gonna be dipping it with these dips I got at a farmer's market here. Oh my God, this tomato, tomato basil garlic spread is so good. Like, I would literally go back just for this. This is my really lazy bowl: pita bread, some spinach, turkey, sauces, hummus. It gets the job done. 30 grams of protein, what can I say? Ah, are you filming? Guess who wished me happy birthday? Good morning! Yo, what's up? His last bolo game of the year— not year. Is it our last? No, yeah. But you said they were generous. This is so cooked. We have no sub today and we're playing a better team. Post soccer game, we got these breakfast sandwiches from Bandit. I got the Broke Millionaire. You got the Bandit. The Bandit. And we got fresh squeezed orange juice. Okay, cheers. Wait, how much is A really big bite. The bun's a little less brioche than I thought it would be. I like the crunch. I do like the crunch. Mine is so like decadent this weekend. The cross-section, oh shit, it's lowkey black. Sausage not hitting. I haven't decided yet. 7. The OJ was really good. 7 out of 7. Oh no! Oh no! Oh, where's the cake? Where's the cake? White chocolate?
