A parent supporting an adult child helps them own their problems. Enabling means doing the work for them: filling out applications, rewriting resumes, scheduling interviews. The difference is whether your child learns to handle it themselves.

Being supportive doesn't automatically mean that you're enabling your adult child. Parents get this confused all the time. There's a big difference between supporting someone while they own the problem. Enabling is when you start owning the problem for them. There's a big difference between, I believe you can figure this out, let me support you, versus, well, I filled out the application for you, I redid your resume, I sent it off to a recruiter, and I scheduled a time. The difference is one creates ownership and the other one accidentally removes it. Now, the goal is never to abandon on your adult child. It's to stop doing the parts that they need to learn to do themselves. Comment support if you want me to make more examples of supporting versus enabling.
