Bill McClain argues that layoffs and department cuts, while painful, force necessary reinvention. Without being pushed to change multiple times, he says, you risk becoming stale and trapped in a siloed mindset. The hardest part is watching colleagues struggle to find new direction when they've never had to imagine a different future.
And when you have to redefine yourself because you've had, there's been a layoff, your department's been cut, and now you're out there trying to redefine yourself again. And if you have not redefined yourself at least a few times in your lifetime, that's the absolute definition of the word stale, right? So how do you envision the future if your whole mindset is stale in this box or silo? Right. And how painful is that to watch people that you, you've worked with for years and years in a company that you love? And how painful is that when you just don't know which way to turn to get out of that box?
