The real reason you're not doing the thing | NEXTletter read by Frederik

Dr. Frederik G. Pferdt argues you're stuck because you're attached to a specific outcome. You wait for guarantees of success, but you can only control the doing, not the result. Like an archer who releases the arrow and lets it go, focus on the process this week, not what comes after.

There is something you keep meaning to do. You know what it is. And you keep telling yourself, "Not yet." A little bit more time, a little bit more preparation, when maybe things are more settled. I want to tell you something I've learned from working with some of the most driven creative people I know. It's never. About time. The real reason you're not doing the thing is that you need to know how it's going to go before you're willing to begin. You don't just want to write the book, you want to write a book people love. You don't just want to start the business, You want to start that one that really works. You don't just want to put yourself out there. You want it to land well. And so you wait, you refine, you prepare a little more. Because as long as you haven't started, the dream of how it could go is still perfectly intact. The moment you begin, that dream is at risk. And that risk feels really unbearable. I remember I had a student once, smart, passionate, completely ready. He had his business idea mapped out, the plan, the pitch, everything. But he never launched because he didn't just want to launch a company. He wanted to launch a successful company. So he was waiting for a guarantee that nobody gets. Before they start. And there's actually a word for it. It's called attachment. Attachment to the outcome, to how it has to go before you're willing to begin. And the moment you see it for what it is, you can finally let it go. Because here's what I've realized. There are things in life that are completely within your control and things that are not. The doing is yours, always. The outcome never was. So you can write the book. You cannot control whether it becomes a bestseller. You can record the video. You cannot control whether it goes viral. You can launch the business, you cannot control whether the market is ready. You can send a message, you cannot control whether they write back. You can show up with everything you have, you cannot control how it lands. And when we make the doing conditional on the outcome going well, We freeze. We wait. We never begin. Not because we are lazy, not because we don't care, because we care too much about something we never meant to control. So I remember I learned this not from a book. I learned it on an archery range. Recently we were camping with family and friends, kids running around everywhere between the targets, and at some point the instructor said something I haven't forgotten since. He said, "Your only job is everything before the release. The stance, the breath, the aim, that's yours, completely yours." But the moment the arrow leaves the bow, it belongs to the world. The archer who tries to steer it after it's already gone has already disturbed the shot before it happened. So I stood there in those trees and recognized myself immediately. I had been gripping outcomes so tightly for years. That the doing itself had become careful and small. Writing with one eye on the page and one eye already on how people would receive it. The work that actually reaches people is never made that way. It's made with full presence, full commitment to the doing itself, and then released. Without conditions. So here's what I want to ask you to do. Think of your thing, the one you keep meaning to do. What outcome are you holding on to? What has to go well before you allow yourself to begin? Just name it. Say it out loud or write it down. And then this week, try one thing. Take one real step toward it. Not because the outcome is certain, not because you're ready, not because you have guarantee. Just for the doing itself. The future doesn't start when everything is guaranteed. It starts from the moment you let go. And it starts from within. I'm Frederik G. Pferdt, and this is Next Level.
