Ganesh Komma breaks down why Indian markets fell sharply on March 3, 2026: US-Israel strikes on Iran sparked fears of oil supply disruption through the Strait of Hormuz, pushing crude prices higher and pressuring the rupee. Nifty dropped 1.2%, gold surged 2.6%, and stocks like L&T fell 5%, while defense plays held up.

Markets opened sharply down because of rising tensions in the Middle East. If you look at major countries like US and Israel striking on Iran created fear about oil supply disruption through the Strait of Hormuz. And whenever crude oil fears rise, markets go into a risk off mode. So that's the time to be more cautious. Now looking at the individual index performance as on yesterday nifty down by 1.2% nifty junior down by 1.5, mid caps small caps 1.7 and 1.9% down. Along with bank nifty by around 1.1% down. So broad based selling has happened and there is no actual place to hide. Now why did the markets fall? What is the main reason for seeing this decline? It's very simple. If crude oil rises, India's import bill increases and as a result of these things inflation also rises, rupee gets into a very high pressure and market sentiments actually weakens. That's exactly what we have seen yesterday. Now looking at what are those points which we should be careful about and where exactly is is the money going to? Gold jumped 2.6% yesterday, very near to its all time high. Silver again up by 2 percentage. And these are some classic safe haven moves. Whenever geopolitical tension rises, money flows into hard metals like gold, silver. And yes yesterday we have seen that increase as well. Now focusing on the the key sectors, defense stocks were strong. Defense have shown some strength. Stocks like your Hindustan Aeronautics limited B Dynamics limited B Electronics limited Paras Defense normally in a geopolitical tension environment defense actually exhibits some strength. And whenever the tension rises, defense theme becomes more and more active in terms of picking up the strength and losers of the day. Yes we have seen L and T down almost by around 5% likely due to Middle east exposure. Along with that we have also seen auto stocks like Maruti, Tata motors fell around 3%. It's the cascading effect of the market reliance down by around 2.5% majorly because of the oil volatility impact. So all the cyclical related stocks saw pressure. So on a short term we should be more cautious, more selective, do not aggressively trade. And on the long term it's still macroeconomic wise India is at a better factor. Let me know in the comments. What are your thought process about market today?
