Plant garlic cloves 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost, spacing them 4 to 6 inches apart and 4 inches deep. They'll overwinter and produce bulbs by summer. If your family eats one bulb a week, plant 62 cloves now, harvest 52 bulbs next year, save 10 for replanting, and repeat.

A handful of garlic could grow you a lifetime supply, but only if you plant it the right way. Garlic is in the same plant family as onions and chives, but it actually grows in an entirely different way. It grows from itself. Garlic has to be planted in the fall, so about 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost. You're going to make holes that are about 4 or so inches in the soil and about 4 or 6 inches apart from one another. You're gonna bury your cloves down in the soil, and they're just gonna sit there all winter long and form an entire bulb that's ready to harvest next summer. So let's say your family eats 1 garlic bulb a week. That means you need 52 bulbs to last you through the entire year. So this fall, you're going to plant 62 tiny little cloves in the soil. Fast forward to next summer, you'll take 52, put 'em in your kitchen. The other 10, right about this time next year, You're going to pull those bulbs out, and you're going to start the process all over again.
