In this monologue, NBA player Gary Payton II discusses why he gets tattoos and what each piece represents. He frames tattoos as a form of self‑expression that captures childhood memories, family bonds, personal milestones, and pop‑culture icons. He describes a lily on his shoulder dedicated to his mother, a Heath Ledger portrait on his leg commemorating the actor’s impact, a tattoo added after his standout 2022 NBA season, a bat symbol on his inner arm for protection, an Avatar‑inspired Navi design, and a Golden Snitch on the back of his neck that he likens to a seeker’s quest in Harry Potter—signifying perseverance and the reward of finding something elusive. Throughout, his tone is reflective and proud, emphasizing the emotional weight each inked image carries.

Chapters

I choose tattoos just to express myself through ink. Things I grew up with and childhood memories, things I've been through throughout my life. Like when I was young, I just wanted people to see my tattoo, so I had to get the first one on the shoulder. The flowers up here, the lilies, for my mom. Favorite flower, big lilies. For moms, you know, you always gotta get the first one to moms. She can't be mad. Start off with big Heath Ledger right here. Icon, GOAT. I got this cool guy on the back of my leg. I had to throw him on there after '22 season. It was a pretty legendary season. Finish it off. Got the big bat right here on the inside. Make sure I always stay. And then one of my favorites actually is, I have an Avatar down here. Big Navi. Most meaningful tattoo? Probably I have a Golden Snitch on my back of my neck from Harry Potter. And it's probably the most meaningful just because if you know Harry Potter and know Quidditch, a Seeker's pretty hard. You gotta find a very small ball and you know, you gotta go on a little journey to see where it is and find it. But once you get it, it's game over. So it's probably the most meaningful for me. Thank you.
