In this brief presentation, Ashley Chandler explains that adolescents develop self‑regulation and coping skills primarily within the family’s relational system. She argues that the health of the parent‑child relationship and the overall home environment is the foundation for a teen’s ability to take care of themselves. Sending a teen to an outside therapist without the caregivers also doing relational work is likened to putting fresh roses on a dead rose bush – it may look appealing temporarily, but the underlying roots, stems, and soil are unhealthy, so lasting change is impossible. Sustainable improvement, she says, requires addressing and strengthening the whole family system.
