In this recorded UNESCO roundtable, James Ong, founder and managing director of the Artificial Intelligence International Institute, introduces himself and outlines his organization’s mission to promote sustainable, human‑centered AI. He links his work to the Albatros Foundation’s “Finding Happy” initiative and to the proposed United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 18 – AI for Humanity. Ong emphasizes the need for human‑AI symbiosis, describing five core AI capabilities he calls the “Five A’s”: Acceleration, Amplification, Automation, Augmentation, and Autonomy. He balances this technical vision with a call for human qualities—empathy, creativity, trust, anticipation, and foresight—to guide AI development responsibly. He concludes by wishing the roundtable success and expressing hope to meet participants at future events such as Davos.

Hello, my name is James Ong. I'm very glad to be invited by Dr. Ghislaine Boylet of Albatros Foundation to participate in this Finding Happy project at the UNESCO event. I'm the founder and managing director of Artificial Intelligence International Institute, an AI think tank based in Singapore with global engagement. We advocate sustainable AI for humanity. I'm also the co-author of the book published by Wiley called AI for Humanity: Building Sustainable AI for the Future. I'm also a champion of advocating the AI for humanity as the United Nations SDG Goal 18. Now, what is my link to this particular initiative with Albatross Foundation and Professor Alan Langer? Both initiatives advocate for the SDG number 18, where Ghislaine and Dr. Professor Alan Langer are proposing the respect and goodwill for humanity, which is very similar to the AI for Humanity as SDG number 18 as well. And I personally believe this should be integrated and work together because part of the concept we want to foster is that in the future AI era, One of the concepts we cover is about human-AI symbiosis. Human and AI needs to work together, and therefore it makes a lot of sense that we have human with goodwill and respect together with AI for humanity as part of our joint mission to accomplish so that we can elevate everything that needs to be done. As how I would like to see where I can contribute to this particular Finding Happy Initiative. I believe with AI, typically in the market, people talk about providing the 5 A's. The first A is Acceleration. The second A is Amplification. The third A is Automation. The fourth A is Augmentation. And last but not least, with the latest agentic AI, is called Autonomy. So these are some of the functional capabilities AI can empower human to do and extremely powerful. At the same time, I feel that we need to work on the human touch aspect of this whole thing, where we need to look at how we can articulate with empathy, how we can be more artistic with more creativity, how can we assure to build trust, and how can we actually build anticipation so that we have foresight and wisdom to foresee what things could come, especially including both the intended consequence and unintended consequence, so that we do not lose the respect and goodwill. I'd like to wish this particular roundtable a great success and look forward to meet all of you one of these days, hopefully at a future event, including Davos. Thank you very much. Bye-bye.
