UNESCO Event : Pr. Jayati Ghosh Economist interviewed by Dr. Gustavo Merino, UNESCO director

In a UNESCO‑hosted Albert Hirschman Lecture organized by the Management of Social Transformations (MOST) programme, interviewer Dr. Gustavo Merino (Speaker A) asks Professor Jayati Ghosh (Speaker B) why rethinking economic paradigms and development is crucial. Ghosh argues that ignoring structural transformation undermines real development, noting that successful development over the past fifty years has always involved major structural changes. She stresses the need to move beyond narrow, micro‑level interventions toward large‑scale, state‑led strategies. After three decades of diminishing the role of the state, she calls for a revival of an accountable state that can create conditions for equitable, sustainable growth that aligns the economy with society, the planet, and nature. Ghosh warns that relying solely on markets or private capital cannot achieve these goals.
