Four voices alternate verses contrasting worldly pursuits with devotion to Jesus Christ. They call the world a "short and fading shore" and "hollow prize," repeating "Take this world, give me Jesus" as a plea to surrender earthly desires for faith's steadfastness.
A short and fading shore.
It tempts us with its greedy lies to love the things below. The pride of life, the love of self, search for wealth and fame on these foolish hearts depends to build a crumbling name.
So take this world, give me Jesus.
This hollow prize, this fading show, my soul's one anchor, my hope and treasure, it's Christ my Lord and the grace We chase the shadows of this age and drink from wells that dry. But through the noise, the spirit speaks, a whisper from on high. Why build your house upon the sand?
On things that cannot stand.
So take this world, but give me Jesus, this hollow prize, this fading show.
My soul's one anchor, my hope and treasure is Christ my Lord and the grace he shows.
Let all —have now faded away beside the light of Christ today.
All earthly gain I count as loss. My only glory is the cross.
Take this world, but give me Jesus. So take this world, but give me Jesus. This heart Oh, who'll prize this fading show?
My soul's one anchor, my hope and treasure is Christ my Lord and the grace he shows.
So take the world, but give me Jesus. So take the world, Give me Jesus.
