In this episode of the Conscious Design Podcast, host Ian Peterman talks with Doc Hudson, founder of ODIN Materials, about the company’s flagship product, Dopewood – a hemp‑based dimensional lumber intended to replace traditional timber. Hudson explains that hemp grows in about 120 days, yields roughly twice the wood volume per acre and four times the paper per acre compared to trees, and can be processed into 2×4s, 4×4s, etc., using a custom press that can produce ten boards in twenty minutes. The company is developing a fully hemp‑based adhesive (using hemp flour, flower resins, and seeds) to keep the product 100 % renewable. Hemp’s regenerative properties improve soil health and sequester about 15 t of CO₂ per hectare per growing cycle, making the material carbon‑negative. ODIN Materials operates a 19‑acre farm in Eastern Oregon, plans to source additional biomass from other growers, and aims to expand hemp cultivation to Idaho. Beyond lumber, Hudson outlines a longer‑term vision: a large‑scale direct‑air‑capture system that would convert captured CO₂ into carbon nanofibers, graphene, and other advanced materials for batteries, solar panels, and even rockets. The target is to capture a gigaton of CO₂ per year, producing roughly 107 000 kg of carbon fiber hourly. The interview also touches on historical uses of hemp in construction, potential future products (hempcrete, MDF, textiles), and the anticipated market launch of Dopewood within the next 12 months. Contact information (odinmaterials.com, odin@odinmaterials.com) is provided.
