In this episode of the Conscious Design Podcast, host Ian Peterman interviews Richard Schreiber, a technology professional turned neurodiversity advocate. Schreiber recounts how his daughter's experience with autism and chronic bullying in public school sparked his commitment to improve inclusion for neurodiverse individuals. He founded an autism support community in New York City and, through an EXO program, conceived the Mbutu Initiative, later branded the Ubuntu Game, a board‑game‑based learning platform. The game is designed to bring teenagers together in face‑to‑face sessions that prompt discussion on diversity, inclusion, climate change, and other social issues. Schreiber explains the hybrid strategy: a physical board game complemented by a web version, with future AR/VR extensions that let players experience sensory differences (e.g., autism) via avatars. The game incorporates crowdsourced question content, point‑based progression, and collaborative activities such as debates, charades, and cooking challenges. He outlines plans to create multiple game “flavors” for different audiences—neurodiverse vs. neurotypical groups, geographic adaptations, and later extensions for college students, young professionals, and corporate team‑building. The initiative is approaching its first beta test with several schools, intends to launch a Kickstarter to fund an affordable ($20 or less) consumer version, and aims to donate copies to underserved communities. Schreiber emphasizes the broader vision of fostering global empathy and breaking down barriers through an inclusive, crowd‑driven educational experience.
