In this episode Ian Peterman interviews Ben Bensaou, author of Build to Innovate, about how large organisations can democratise and systematise innovation. Bensaou argues that innovation is fundamentally customer‑centric and that companies must close two critical gaps: the distance between R&D innovators and frontline staff who interact with customers, and the distance between the organisation and the broader ecosystem of customers, non‑customers, regulators and partners. He illustrates his points with multiple case studies – the accidental discovery of P&G’s Magic Eraser from BASF’s Basotect foam, Philips’ limescale‑filter kettle derived from living with UK households, Ecocem’s low‑carbon cement that succeeded by lobbying regulators, and BASF’s shift from a commodity paint supplier to a strategic partner for automakers. Bensaou stresses the importance of rotating teams to bring diverse perspectives, listening to the “voice”, “silence” and “weak signals” of customers, and engaging non‑customers such as regulators. He contrasts cultural approaches to innovation, noting Japan’s systematic, process‑driven continuous innovation versus the Western focus on individual geniuses, and highlights how diversity, permission, simple tools and a culture that rewards ideas can boost employee engagement and talent retention. The conversation ends with a call to build a community around the book and its ideas.
