In this episode of the Conscious Design Podcast, host Ian Peterman interviews Frida Minosi, brand designer at Norwegian startup Retire, about the company’s mission to create 100 % reusable, renewable‑material tires. The conversation traces Retire’s origins in 2015 at a university, where engineers first developed fast‑change bicycle tires for winter use. A breakthrough in materials and machinery led to a complete reinvention of tire production, expanding the product line from bicycles to e‑bikes, bike trailers, strollers, and other micromobility applications, with plans to eventually enter the car market. Frida explains how the company’s automated pilot factory in Norway re‑configures existing industrial machines into a high‑speed, low‑manual‑labour line capable of producing a tire every few seconds, and how AI will support quality control. Sustainability is a core differentiator: their life‑cycle analysis shows an 82 % reduction in CO₂ emissions per tire, and they have created the world’s first carbon‑neutral bicycle tire by using carbon‑negative materials. The business model focuses first on OEM partnerships (e.g., Frog Bikes, Thule, Tule) and later on the aftermarket, leveraging localized, on‑demand production to cut supply‑chain fragility and inventory costs. Pricing is positioned competitively, with material choice dictating cost tiers. Frida also discusses brand positioning challenges, navigating EU green‑claim regulations, and avoiding greenwashing. Retire is scaling up to mass production by the end of 2025, preparing a Series A round, and planning a global network of factories to serve Europe, the US, and Asia, while maintaining a reusable‑tire ecosystem.
