Wim Hof describes injecting himself with E. coli bacteria while doing his breathing technique and suppressing the typical symptoms of nausea, headache, and muscle pain. A 2014 peer-reviewed study documented the effect, challenging the scientific view that the immune system cannot be consciously controlled.

The immune system, according to medical science and physiology, we cannot influence. And I said, we are able to influence it deeply. And then I challenged the scientists to find out while I was doing the breathing, being injected with an E. coli bacteria, which causes sickness. Nausea, headache, pain in the muscles all over, non-well-being, all that. And I made it go away. And by which I showed that we are able to influence deeply into the autonomic nervous system and the innate immune system. And it showed. We were the first ones to show this in science in 2014, published and well. It's all there. And what drove me I never become sick. Suddenly you start thinking about it. And what is it that I'm never sick and I see my friends becoming sick? It's the practice. The practice goes into the innate immune system, into the autonomic nervous system, and much more. It brings out the depth of our physiology to our control. And that's why I went to science. That's why I wanted to research. The breathing techniques in comparative studies. And it showed. We changed science.
