There is minimal interaction with another speaker who only provides brief acknowledgments, making it primarily a solo presentation by Jagadeesh P.
Over and over again. If you have applied resume in many places, more than 20 to 30 places, but you have not got any callback or you have not get any reply from the recruiters, that means your resume is completely failing. If you have spent lot of time in making these applications and got nothing back, let me tell you, this podcast is exactly for you because it's not about always your skill set, it's about your resume and how more specifically if you're able to use the keywords correctly in order to cross this applicant tracking system. Here is the shocking truth. 75% of the resumes never get seen by any recruiters at all because of the way in which it has been scanned in the ATS system, particularly in product design rules and also in the UI UX design rules. Recruiters receive hundreds of resumes, guys, every day, okay? But the point is they only filter it using a machine. So if your resume is not at all passing that filter, your dream job is going to go away already from the time what you're thinking. So in the next 10 minutes I'm going to be giving you three changes what you can able to make in the resume right away to make it ATS friendly, get hired and make sure you use the tools and hacks which I'm telling you in this particular podcast and make it ready before 24 hours so that from tomorrow you're getting ready for the full resume.
Okay?
With that we'll jump into this podcast. Welcome guys. Welcome to the Design for Change. Thank you for staying tuning here and I'm really happy that all of the listeners are encouraging our podcast and we've been listened in more than 50 plus countries. In fact it is more than 55 countries and we got 4.9 in Apple and Spotify. That's really happy. Please keep encouraging us as well as put your pain points also in the comment and chat box so that we can also record more of the pain points. What you're also asking. Okay, so today we are Talking about the 80s resume system as well as the resume for all the creative designers. There is a huge difference between a normal resume and a creator's resume, right? A normal resume will have keywords, will have text, will have some kind of details about their projects, educational experience, award certification. But a creator's resume, a designer's resume needs to be little different from that. You can also use the same things, whatever is happening there. But the look and feel should look very, very clear that he's a creative professional. At the same time, you should maintain the ethics towards how the ATS system also scans your resume. Okay, so let's talk about the first part. What is this ATM and ATS and why it is definitely a big blocking factor for you. ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System. Many of the things like let's say the software used by mostly fortune finder companies, 99% I would say the big size companies like Robert Bosch, SAP, IBM, tcs, Wipro, all these things. So almost even mid sized companies are also using this to manage their resume for the application. What they're resuming, what they do is they scan through the keywords along with your job description and they will do a formatting. That's why you need to not have any kind of a fancy graphics. You're making it a little clean and clear and simple. It will be more better. In fact you can use this particular tool called CANVA to also find these elements. And you don't have to use any big columns and fancy tables. It will create a big formatting error. Third, your structure needs to match with the expected details what the recruiter is expecting with respect to education, skill set as well as your background with respect to work experience. So three things is very important. Jobscan found that 61% of the resume with graphics and multiple columns fail in parsing that resume. Meaning the system is completely ignoring the best points if it's not matching their requirements. See, so this is the main important factor of ATS and this is why your resumes are getting blocked. I hope you must have got a clarity what I'm talking about. Now let's get to the second part. The three changes what you need to make in the next 24 hours to make sure that your resume is getting hired. The first key change what you need to make is keyword match. The second word what you need to change is results and first bullet points. The third change which you need to make is ATS Safe formatting. Let's talk about the change one. First of all, print and copy the job description into a document in a word file or something like that.
Okay.
And make sure you also highlight all the design related keywords like let's say design system, usability system as well as figma as well as user research, prototyping, wireframe accessibility, whatever is your relevant stakeholder which is available if you want. You can also use ChatGPT to get this relevant keyword for your relevant job description. What you're trying to apply. If you're completely numb towards that, make sure you put all these words naturally appear in the job description titles Bullet points, skill set, project description. Because all of your resume will have these details, but you will not use these main keywords which I've already told with respect to product design and UI UX design. In fact, if you're looking for product managerial role, so you can use the same keywords which is relevant for that. So I'll tell you one simple hack. Use tools such as resume worded job scan, job hunter and paste your resume plus job description and get a math score. In fact, in this podcast also I'll give you my resume calculator score. You can use that. It's a char GPT tuned engine, over 15,000 students. Core knowledge, you can use that.
Okay.
Make sure you get at least 75 to 80 percentage of the marks over there. Once you're ready, then your first change is done which is called keyword match. Now let's go to the second change which is results first bullet points.
Okay.
See ATS always scans your resume for keywords.
Okay.
But human scans for result. After eight years, somebody else also scans your resume. Right? If you want to get hired, that is why you need to use this word called star matrix.
Okay?
Situation, task, action, result. Are we clear about it? So what you need to use is you need to use certain verbs to write it down. I've created this kind of a thing. I have created a 15% usability error decrease. I've increased conversion ratio up to 2x faster. I've increased engagement ratio up to 30% faster. This was the problem. This is what I created as a task. This is what I solved. This is the result. So when you create your entire project in a star format, like let's say redesign the E commerce checkout flow, reduced cart abandonment by 17%. This creates a very strong scan system for your people, whoever is viewing you. Instead of putting a work done E commerce project, no, that's completely weak. Right? You need to have always metrics outcome and remember this word. S T A R Situation. Task, action. Result. Situation is a problem statement. Task is what did you do? Action is what exactly steps you created. Steps, sub steps, sub steps, Process, sub process. And the results is the metrics.
Okay.
See even if you don't have exact number, you can use approximate numbers like quantitative impact, like let's say improved user task completion, approximately 10%. Enhanced accessibility for lower vision users, which is 15%. Something like that. You can put that recruiters spend average of 6 to 30 seconds to initially scan your resume. Guys, results are first important thing which people are looking for. People are not interested to read about your big big descriptions or about yourself for fifty hundred words or maybe five paragraphs. Nobody cares, okay? It's a big mistake. Many designers and experienced designer also do by putting lot of about statement which is completely waste of time for them. Now let's get to the second third change which is the last change. So the first change, just to recap, it's a keyword match. The second change what we are talking about, the metrics match the results and the bullet points. The third change is ATS safe formatting. Use always a single column layout. Don't use much complex tables. Use very simple web optimized typeface like let's say Arial Calibri, Helvetica Times New Roman. Don't use any high end fancy typefaces. Sometimes the resume scanner doesn't do that. It will not scan automatically. It's all a set of algorithms which has been created by programmers inside sitting in that company who has created this scan system, right? So in order to make this scan system successful, they would have used multiple resumes to first format it. So how does the multiple resumes start taking that format is because of the pattern which has been created by many many years of resumes which has been done in the online or uploaded in the big portal. Like let's say you take one company like TCS cts, they have already lacks of resume, right? So they would have given that to ATS tracking system software designer to do it. So what are the most predominantly used typeface? It's a classical typeface like Helvetica type, like let's say Arial Calibri Times New Roman. These are all the very very common typefaces. So the machine, the ATS system would have got a knowledge and trained towards only this typefaces. So find out the five classical typefaces and just create your resume accordingly. Very simple. You can tell my brand guidelines is this that. But ATS system doesn't work like that, right? Maybe you can have one special copy of your own typeface and brand guideline. You can send it as a personal copy to anybody when you're asking for a personal referral. But when you're going through an ATS system you need to create that and always save it like a doc format or PDF if only asked specifically, because ATS only reads this. See this is how the background of the ATS works and make sure you clearly give a headings like experience, education, skills, projects, achievements and make sure your graphics is not away and you're putting a simple icons and other things to go because ATM cannot ATS cannot scan all these things. It is only for the human to view it after the first stage is passed. Keep the graphics minimal and icons out so that first the ATM scans it and then the icons are scanned by the humans in the second layer. See guys, upload your resume to Resume Go AI or vmockup to see if the ATS is ready for the text correctedly which is put in. If it cannot detect your job titles, fix the format accordingly and reapply it. Use this tool ResumeGo, AI and VmockUp to try it out. Okay, superb. I think you got the three changes which I've told you. The third part of this podcast is tools to use right now. So please use this tool called jobscan co Keyword Match Checkup tool. You can use this tool called resumeworder.com instant resume score plus suggestion. It will give you. You can use this tool called tealhq.com it will track your multiple versions of your resume for each role. Let's say you could have three roles like UI role, UX role or graphic design role or product Manager role, right? Fourth you can use vmockup.com, this uses AI powered parsing plus feedback. Fifth one, you can use simple canvas resume template ATS optimized. If you put this keyword in the canva you will get it. In fact it is great to start guys, if you're a fresher, start with this.
Okay?
I hope you would have got the tools strategy part of it. The fourth part of this podcast is main main strategy to keep pending see maintain always a master resume which is like a dump. You put everything there and create another resume called primary skill set resume where you only target a UI role or UX role or UI UX role or a product manager role or senior U UX role. Okay, you can duplicate that always in canva or anything to do it right? So don't think it's a waste of time. This is what is going to take you into the whole new different level. Because when you send a big resume to everybody, people get confused. What is this here? This guy has worked in graphic designer role, web designer role, UI role, UX role. So what should I do with this guy? They will get confused and then they will reject the profile because any which way the second layer is going to be scanned by the human, right? Or the recruiter, right? So please be very careful about that. That is the most winning important strategy. You need to keep master regime that you can have it for your Reference and for your mentors or accountability or peer support. But the main primary skill set regime which we need to send it to the specific role specific company specific recruiter. You can have something like a secondary skill set resume that is a backup for you. If nothing works, you can use that secondary skill set. Hey, I still have a graphic design knowledge. I still have a UI design knowledge, I still have a web design knowledge. At least give me job there so that it becomes an entry point for you. Slowly you can go and work there in that company, gain confidence and then work on their primary skill set and go for a big product based company later. Instead of you sitting and getting rejected for longer time. Why don't you have a backup plan? Okay, very important thing and create a very role specific versions in under 15 minutes. Like let's say matching keywords, shuffling most relevant projects to make the top recruiters get hired, adjusting the bullet points fit the company's language, test each and every resume guys with the keyword scanner before sending it to the people. Okay, so this is the strategy part of it. So I talked about the first part which is what is ATS and blocking. Second I talked about the three key changes, what you need to make keyword match and results, star metrics and ATS safe formatting with respect to graphic column, bullet and everything. And the third part I told about the tool and fourth part I told about the strategy. I hope this podcast is very very useful for you. Please listen to it one more time and take notes and immediately implement it in the next 24 hours. My guarantee is in the next 15 days if you start tweaking these changes and you applying for the job you will get at least five to six interview callbacks.
