Robyn Anderson walks through setting up Claude's Custom Instructions feature, showing where to find it in Settings and what you can specify like communication style and phrases to avoid. She warns that misconfiguring these instructions can actually hurt the AI's performance, a mistake she's seen happen in her classes.

Hi, I'm Jam and I'm here to make sure you're not using your AI tools wrong. I'm doing a 6-week sprint, 30 days of micro lessons on Claude. Today we are talking about custom instructions, and I was surprised at how many people had never heard of them, how many people are not using them, and then also how many people are using them wrong. So in Claude, you can just go to settings and then you'll see in general and custom instructions. This is where you can put in your requirements for how you want Claude to communicate with you, whether you want it to say certain phrases or not say certain phrases. You can also tell it what tools and platforms you use so that when it creates content, it creates it just for that platform. Anyways, go ahead and set up your custom instructions, but don't do it wrong because if you do, it could actually ruin it. We tried that today in class. If you want more help on this, check my link in bio and join us in our school community called Club Jam. See you there.
