I just built an entire family tree going back to the 1800s. No DNA kit, no subscriptions. It was all with these 4 prompts. The first prompt interviews you about your grandparents and it lets you kind of go into the history of where you come from. The second one organizes all of the information, and the third one tells you what free historical websites you could go to to get any of the missing information. And then the fourth builds your actual family tree. I found my great-great-grandmother's last name and I had never known it, and honestly made me a little teary-eyed.
