James Sinclair says first-time founders often think they need a co-founder to cover technical skills or sales, but tools like Webflow and cheap agencies let you build alone. Prototype and prove your idea works before recruiting a partner.

A first time entrepreneur and you're thinking, I need a co founder. That's the stage you're in right now. I'm going to tell you very quickly why the answer is no, why the answer is yes, but for all the reasons you don't believe or are not thinking about it. So you're probably thinking, I need a co founder because you got this great idea and you want a technical co founder who's going to build it, who's going to take my idea and convert it into a thing, an app, a website, a product, because you don't know how to do that. And the gap in knowledge and understanding between what you want to do and what has to be built you think is so wide. So if you just had a technical found co founder, they could build it. Maybe you don't have to pay for building it because that technical co founder is also actually going to be an engineer and build it. And they're going to answer all these questions that you're not even thinking about because you don't even know what language should we build it in? Do we need integrations? What are integrations? What are all these things you've got to do? So that's number one, you're probably thinking, or maybe you're technical and you go in the other way. I'm a technical founder, I can build this solution, but I need someone in sales marketing, because I don't know how to eloquently articulate my message. I don't know how to explain to an investor in 10 words what I'm doing and the size of the opportunity and why it's going to be so impactful. Okay, I understand. And in both of those scenarios, maybe you're right. Maybe you do need a co founder. But I just want to put one option out there which is actually you can do a lot yourself. The rise of commodity engineering and toolkits available on the Internet means the chance that you can be a solo entrepreneur and scale this business without the size of team that you think you need is enormous. Go to webflow, build a website, go to Balsamiq, do some prototyping wireframes. There are tools out there that will let you take what's in your head and go a little bit further than you think you can. There are low cost agencies out there to do first MVPs. There are millions of solutions that allow you to start as a solo entrepreneur and get to the next step. So go to the next step. Show me your prototype in Balsamiq. Show me your website that you've built in webflow. Show me your something you've done somewhere that shows you've put time, effort and energy into trying to bring this to life and articulate what's in your head online. I'd say you don't need a co founder yet. You need to go a bit further yourself to understand where you're really lacking and where those gaps really are.
