James Sinclair argues that startups stuck in neutral need growth itself as the solution. He cites Sam Altman's definition of startups as growth-focused, then walks through two paths: diagnose what's blocking you, or set a specific, measurable OKR to make progress real.

The only thing that solves lack of growth is growth as a startup. That's the only thing that matters. What defines you as a startup? You are looking for growth versus any other business, net new business, you just starting a business. Startups are defined and you're given that label because you're in the growth business. And it was Sam Altman who said the phrase. But the point is really clear. If you are a startup and the metric you are being judged on and the metric for success and the metric to get to the next step is growth, then you need to be able to define what are the steps you've got to take to get to that growth. And people take out of two methods. One is what's preventing me from getting that growth. And that can be a useful exercise to kind of work backwards of why are you not getting it? And the other is to write actually the sequence of what do I need to do to achieve it. It's the OKR model. What is my objective and how do I know if I've got there? But the key being is when you actually write it down, what do I have to do to achieve growth? It makes it so much more manageable. Good luck.
