StartUp Founders: Cold Investor Emails Work

James Sinclair shows founders how to cold email angel investors. Use a CRM to track responses, open with proof you've researched them, name the market problem and its size, then show traction that proves you can execute.

If you're a startup founder and you are about to go out for angel investment and send out those cold emails, two things to help you along in your journey. Number one, use a CRM to manage the conversations. Understand if you're emailing multiple people at the same company, see if they respond. Be able to track, measure. Even though it's a one to one game, you are in a volume game. So whether you use HubSpot to get click tracking, airtable, Excel, post it, note, I don't care but you should keep track of it. It's also good cadence and good developments and entrepreneur to make sure that when you execute you have a way to be able to measure and manage. The second thing is the email that you're going to send. Number one, within the first five words, even though it's a cold email, show that you have done research that you've understood who they are, what they invested and why they should actually read the email. You've got to even though it's a cold email, you've got to show it's not spam within five words. So it's not hey Mark Cuban, I saw you on Shark Tank. It's hey, I know you invest in this company, this industry. I saw you on this talk. I read this article that you were that you op edit. This is why I'm reaching out because I think it aligns with xyz. You got to do that within the first five words because they're getting a lot of blanket spam. Second is your problem statement. This is not about you and your solution. What problem exists in the marketplace. You're hoping the angel investor can infer the size of the market, will nod their head and agree that is a problem. You're going to add maybe half a sentence on the market size, maybe TAM number of people, number of things. Some data you have that just shows this is a bigger problem than than perhaps they realize. You're then going to run into how you're solving it, what your solution is. One sentence, one and a half sentences and then the most important thing, you're going to show how you have done insane amount of work to get here, how you are worthy of a response, how you are worthy to be one of the three to five investments they make a year. You need to show that prior to this email, everything you have done to validate and mitigate that risk and show that you are not just some rando in the basement with a good idea. You are a person that can execute. You must show that good luck.
