StartUp Founders: Record Your Pitch ASAP!

James Sinclair tells startup founders to record themselves pitching repeatedly. Practice a one-minute elevator pitch and a three-minute full explanation until you get comfortable. The repetition forces you to improve.

Startup founders, you have to practice whatever it is you're about to do. Your pitch, your customer pitch, your money pitch, your presentation, you have to practice. And the way you have to practice and it sucks and no one likes doing this is you have to record yourself, period. So I would tell you, if you're.
In the early stage, your idea, or even a bit further, and you're building it, but you haven't quite articulated your storyline, there's a couple of things you.
Can do literally right now to help you kind of define it, articulate it and be better talking about it. And I know this, that Seinfeld episode, I think where he basically says more.
People would prefer to be in the.
Coffin than given the eulogy. That's how much people don't like public speaking.
But a couple of things you can do. One, can you record a one minute video telling me what your business does? I don't need it for me, for you. Record it one minute and you're going to record it again and watch it.
And be like, oh, I said and like and sneezed. You're going to record it again and again and again.
One minute video.
Can you record a three minute video.
Telling me what everything I need to know about your business? Imagine if angel investor or VC emailed.
You and said, hey, I heard you're.
Working on this cool idea. Can you send me a three minute video explaining everything I need to know? Record that video for yourself. Just get used to it. Just by default of repeating and practice, you will become infinitely better. And then second to that, if you have a deck or a pitch that.
You'Re going to do, load up your.
Zoom, load up your video camera, whatever it is, and just record yourself presenting. Then watch it back and you'll find so many areas that you can improve. And as you press end on the kind of record button, you'll be like, oh, I wish I said this so you'll record it again. It happens, happens. When I do these, I literally press end. I'm like, oh, I missed such a key point and I have to make a choice. I have a rule. I'm not going to re record more than three times because it's all about speed getting it out there. And if I infer something that someone misunderstands, I'll always explain it later. My point is start recording yourself talking. One minute pitch, three minute pitch, sales pitch, investor pitch, phone, zoom, whatever, Record, watch iterate. Record, watch iterate. I swear to you, you'll become infinitely better about talking about your solution about yourself. About your team, about your vision, about your strategy, and you need to do that. So many founders go into their first meeting and they've never done that, and they wonder why. They stumble. Good luck.
