A short YouTube monologue by James Sinclair advising startup founders about the risks of building a business tightly coupled to ChatGPT. Sinclair warns that 100% reliance on ChatGPT (vendor/API/pricing/policy) is risky and recommends treating ChatGPT as an MVP while concurrently developing alternative models (e.g., open-source) to avoid single-vendor dependency.

If you're a startup founder building your company on top of ChatGPT, I think there are two things to think about. Number one is your 100% reliance on this partner is a risk. If they go down, you go down. If you don't know their partner strategy, their API strategy, their economic billing strategy, their acceptable use case strategy, you know nothing and you have no seat at the table and you have no leverage or bargaining power. So so as a vendor or a customer you are and or an investor we are at risk that something might happen downstream with your relationship to ChatGPT that ends or significantly interrupts or changes your business. So I think you have to be thinking about ChatGPT as your MVP model. You're going to use it to get out of business as quick as possible, but concurrently you're going to be building your own on the open source model or similar so that you are not reliant on a singular vendor to essentially launch scale and build out your business. Good luck.
