The Difference Between A Problem & An Opportunity

A problem is something you can solve with clear metrics, like a reusable rocket that lands. An opportunity is a market gap where you build something new and success is harder to measure.

The way I look at the difference between a problem and an opportunity is a problem is something you can solve, something you can fix, something that you can measure, something where you see an existing process and you can make it better, you can make it more efficient, you can drive more volume to it, you can just do it better, whatever that might mean. The great thing about a problem is generally there's a metric to that solution. How do I know when I've solved the problem? SpaceX with reusable rockets, how do we know when we solve the problem? Because the rocket will re land and we'll be able to re use it. An opportunity generally is a gap or an opening in the market where you see something that you can offer net new and fill a void, fill a space that could be a service, it could be a restaurant, it could be a product, it could be whatever it is, but essentially net new. So problem is something you're solving, opportunity is something where you see a gap and perhaps the metric is not quite as clear. Good luck.
