A short interview-style YouTube video (hosted by James Laughlin) in which the interviewer asks Chris Luxon about New Zealand's future diversity and immigration over the next 10–20 years and what the country should consider when bringing more people in. The clip begins with an opening question about how diverse New Zealand will become and whether to increase immigration.
As we step into the next 10, 20 years here for New Zealand, you know, what's your thoughts around how diverse our country will become and what we.
Should be doing to consider.
Bringing lots more people in?
Yeah, look, I mean, we're going to really need more immigration into New Zealand. You know, the reality is, when you look at our own demographics, in terms of how our population, our birth rates, we're actually not replacing ourselves. And so as a consequence, we're going to need to open up to more immigration in order to get the economy, and we need to build the economy because actually it's how we afford the public services we want. And so that becomes a really critical part. And I just think in the last few years, we just haven't been competitive enough to actually say, hey, listen, we want you here. We're going to make the case to you really compellingly why you should leave Wales or Manila or South Africa or wherever it is in the world and come here. Not to Australia, not to Canada. And so that's, again, I think the job of the Prime Minister is to build that proposition that this is a place of opportunity.
